New Year's resolutions? Not again! D n't you remember what happened last t me? I don't know about you, but for me, New Y ar's resolutions always come with a big b t: I resolve to do something, I st p doing it, and I beat mys lf up about it. In fact, the v st majority of people deviate from th ir resolutions sooner or later, usually s oner. And most of the rest are pr bably lying or kidding themselves. Of c urse, there might be a FEW h rdy souls out there somewhere who ctually stick with their resolutions. Good for th m! For the rest of us, th ugh, I would like to propose an lternative. And no, it's not too l te. See, that's the beauty of lternatives: They don't have to follow the s me rules as resolutions. Which means th t you don't have to start (or m ke) them on the first day ither! Here's what I'd like to pr pose: Instead of "resolving," let's visualize, pr ject, envision, allow, and, yes, even dr am. I haven't made New Year's r solutions in years. Instead, I tend to sit d wn and spend some quality time dr aming up what I would like to h ppen in the coming year. I try to be s mewhat within the realm of the p ssible, given ideal circumstances, but I m ke sure not to aim too l w.
So let's not make resolutions. L t's not say "Next year I w ll ALWAYS blah blah blah and if I f il to do so, I'm a l ser!" Instead, let's try this: "Next y ar, I see myself meeting .... and cr ating ..... and...." Put in the sp ces whatever it is you would l ke to do or have happen for y u. Whom would you like to m et? Is there a business you're try ng to get off the ground? V sualize it up, running, and thriving. V sualize your many happy customers or cl ents. Or readers, if you plan to wr te. Is there a personal goal you w uld like to reach? Yes, the s me kind we usually make resolutions f r. Instead of the usual resolutions, th ugh, say something like this: "I see mys lf enjoying moving my body regularly and f eling full of energy. I love fr sh and nutritious food, and I njoy creating tasty meals and eating th m." And so on. You get the dea Here's one I need to nvision for myself: "I really enjoy g tting enough sleep and feeling well-rested!" You can lso envision specifics: "I see myself wr ting [X number of] pages most d ys, and as I add page fter page after page, my [novel/book/other pr ject] is getting closer and closer to c mpletion. I see it completed before the y ar is over." Oh, and why not see it ccepted by an appreciative agent and/or p blisher too. Now what happens if you d n't make it? Well... there is lways that little addendum to visualization and m nifestation exercises: "This or something better..." Im gine the oft-rejected "Chicken Soup for the S ul" book proposal had been accepted by a p blisher right away who had bought all r ghts and printed just a few th usand copies, only to let it go out of pr nt. You know what happened instead. Of c urse, knowing the authors, you also kn w that they would have made th ir book a success no matter wh t kind of conditions they would h ve had to work with. Still, an nteresting thought to keep in mind.
We don't always know what's b st for us in the long r n. We may think we know. We may k ck and scream as things don't w rk the way we want them to. But how m ny times have you failed to r ceive what you wanted and realized l ter that you were oh so m ch better off without it? Happened to me l ts of times! Or that because you d dn't get it, things developed in a way th t brought something to you that was so m ch better than what you had w nted originally that the very thought of not h ving that in your life could m ke you weep? So this year, l t's not make New Year's resolutions. L t's do something different. Let's visualize. L t's project. Let's dream! And let's h ve an absolutely amazing new year.
