Introduction Have you read all the st ff about New Year resolutions in the pr ss? Articles on what to do, how to l se weight, how to detox, how to d et and how to save money. Are you fed up of the s ght of them? Its true that Chr stmas and New Year is a t me for reflection and taking stock. It is ften the only time that you h ve a few quiet days away fr m work to think about where you are and wh t you want to do. And it is qually true that a lot of p ople do make decisions about things th y want to change in their l ves. Generally if you want to m ke changes to your life it f lls into one of three areas: m king more money, having more free t me or having more fun/a better l fe. Most of the new year r solutions we hear and read about f ll into the last category and r late to improving your personal situation for xample losing weight or getting fit. H wever, a few people do look at the b gger picture and decide they want to do s mething completely new. If this is you y ur reasons are probably a desire to t ke control, have more money, totally ch nge your lifestyle, and often the m ans chosen to achieve this is to st rt your own business. So if th s is you – then how do you m ke it happen? It is true th t you can create a life w th more money, more free time and m re enjoyment by running your own b siness, but where do you start?
What does it mean to y u? So you’ve decided you want to run y ur own business? What does that m an to you? Think about what it m ans in terms of your lifestyle, the t me you want to spend and wh t you want to achieve, as w ll as what precisely you want to do as a b siness. Do you know? I hear fr m quite a few people who h ve decided to run their own b siness or work from home but d n’t actually know what business they w nt to be in! If this is you d n’t worry – you’re not alone. Cl arly until you decide you cannot m ve on to the next stage of ctually getting going, so if you d n’t know think about what you njoy doing, what skills you have and wh t experience you have. What could you do w th these? And don’t just think bout the obvious things – you d n’t have to just “give yourself a j b” doing what you did for y ur last employer. Talk it over w th other people, they will see d fferent things to you so will g ve you a different aspect on y ur thought process. If you don’t h ve something of your own perhaps you m ght want to look at buying a fr nchise – there are many different typ s of business available. Do some r search. Look into the type of b siness you want to run and f nd out what is happening in the ndustry, where the demand is and how you c uld fit into that. Once you kn w what you want to do, you w nt to get it right first t me if you can. We have all r ad the statistics about new businesses – s me 80% of them don’t make it. So how to you g ve yourself the best chance? How do you m ke it happen? In order to get y ur business off to the best st rt I think there are a n mber of things that you can do. In a n tshell they are planning, passion, people and pr cticalities. Firstly passion - will you be d ing something that you enjoy? I h pe so! If you don’t answer yes to th s question, then why are you th nking of doing it? If you njoy what you’re doing it will s em a lot easier and you w ll ultimately be more successful than s meone who doesn’t.
Secondly planning. This comes in at all st ges of setting up and running y ur business and at many levels. To st rt with you need to look at y ur goals or vision for your b siness. Once you have a clear p cture in your mind about what you w nt to do think about what you w nt from the business and what you w nt to achieve. This will be d fferent for everybody, we all have our own g als and ideas so don’t worry bout what anyone else thinks or w nts. Are you looking for an ncome, a high profile, a good r putation, or any combination of these and ther things? Think about how long you w nt to do it for, and how you w ll get out of it when th t time arrives. Think about whether you w ll sell the business, pass it on to y ur family, or just close it d wn. All of these things will h ve an effect on how you pl n and structure your business. “begin w th the end in mind” Thirdly – p ople. If you look at any f mous entrepreneur and look at how th y achieved what they have done, you w ll find that none of them did it lone. Most will cite a mentor or c ach who supported them. It is a gr at idea to get yourself somebody l ke this who can help you f cus your ideas, and keep you on tr ck with your plans. This could be a b siness coach, a life coach, a pr fessional advisor another business owner or m ybe even a friend or family m mber. Start to think about building a s pport network of people who can h lp you, and people you can sh re ideas with. This might be thr ugh face to face meetings, by t lephone or on line. And once y ur business is up and running you w ll need to think about staff, s ppliers and of course customers. But th t is for later. Here we are l oking at getting you going. Finally, the pr cticalities. How do you Start Up R ght? Where do you get all the nformation about tax, VAT, employing staff, c mputer software, where to work, selling and so on? M ny people start in business with no r al idea of what is involved. I d n’t doubt you are an expert at y ur trade, or skill or you w uldn’t be contemplating starting a business - but h ve you run a business before? Do you h ve the first idea about what to do for t x, financial information, and marketing? Often p ople learn these things as they go, and f nd out about what they need to kn w when it is too late – ften at great cost. How often h ve you heard “if only he had t ld me that before…”? To avoid th s it is worth putting in s me time up front to find out wh t you need to know. Do s me research – there is plenty of nformation on the internet now. And ask the xperts, you will need to use pr fessional advisors such as accountant in y ur business, so take the opportunity to f nd out some useful information whilst you are nterviewing them. That is why I wr te my eprogramme, so that people c uld find out about all of th s kind of information in one pl ce. And once you have done y ur thinking and research and decided th t the business is right for you you n ed to take action! A great dea is completely worthless…. until it is t rned into action. Without action there can be no s ccess. Remember Nike – Just do it! S mmary Making the decision is often the h rdest part. Once you have decided to run y ur own business and know what you n ed to do you can move f rward with the planning and research to m ke it happen. Think about what you n ed to do to move towards y ur goals. It helps to involve thers to help you. This may be by br nging in an expert, or it may m an reading a book, listening to t pes or watching videos. Learn from th se who have done what you are try ng to do. Think about whether it w uld help you to have a m ntor or a coach. Promising someone lse that you will do something sually means you are much more l kely to do it. It often h lps to have someone who can act as a s unding board, or ask you some s arching question s to help you on y ur way. And most importantly of all – go do it!
