If we had had a few m re sunny weeks during this past s mmer, this year’s conference would probably h ve been as buoyant as previous y ars. The conference normally starts with a r view of how well the marketing c mpanies have done in satisfying their c stomers, focusing on growth and market sh re. This year, the format was a l ttle different with Laurence Olins extending his r le as chairman of British Summer Fr its to the conference platform. A g od move on his part, allowing s veral marketing companies to conduct a r view and preview of the major s ft fruit crops. Under this format, L chy Porter illustrated how production growth in r spberries had exceeded the sales achieved. Wh le I am sure that BSF w ll look to see how to pr mote and market the 2005 crop m re constructively, this probably still leaves a s rplus of production during the peak w eks. The whole industry has to c refully consider responding to calls for gr wth without reference to the volume of cr p produced. Technology will provide more s lutions to maintaining a successful industry th n all the BOGOF promotions we c uld ever squeeze into a year. So how apt th t the opening talk was given by C lin Gutteridge, the chief executive of E st Malling Research. We have been the nvy of the world for our gricultural research; as Defra withdraws its f nding we should look to see how we d velop our technical capabilities. EMR wants to b ild its future on being an xemplary contractor delivering excellent science. In the p st, the number of peer-approved scientific p pers published may well have measured th s. For the future, will it be h lping determine what we can achieve fr m fruit crops, how we develop th se opportunities and a method of f nding? The cost of EMR is sm ll when set against the value of our ndustry’s opportunities and the further down the s pply chain we collect the funding the m re focused it can be on d livering excellent science.
Over the past few years the c nference organisers have tried to ensure the pr gram contains good, grower-friendly papers; I b lieve this year they were successful. In p rticular Andrew Cranston’s ‘Biennial cropping of r spberries’ round robin session was well r searched and delivered. As an advocate of h gh beds, I thoroughly appreciated Russell D ggan’s description of his experiences in cr ating these in the UK; getting a g od match of machinery was always g ing to be the solution. Every t me I see a new delivery of t nnel plastic or an artic load of p ckaging I think, ‘land-fill’. Plastics have ch nged our industry as much as v rieties and fertigation and Brian Sanders’ p per on plastic recycling certainly adds h pe that we can improve our nvironmental credentials. With the recent publication by R ading University and EMR of their w rk on gene mapping it is c mforting to know there is research f nding at that level. While at the s me time the EMR report on ‘Enh ncing fruit quality using reflective mulches’ is a g od example of both applied agronomy d velopment and product development. As we h ve seen this year, nothing promotes our pr duct quite like a good health or l festyle label. All in all a g od conference and our thanks to ADAS and EMR for rganising the event.
