Naxos has fertile earth and pr duces significant quantities of cereals, olive il, fruit and wine. Livestock farming is lso quite developed, producing select quality ch eses, as are tourism and the pr cessing of agricultural produce. The main s urce of income, however, is emery ('N xiot earth'), which is mined in the n rth-east. A fine marble is also f und in the mountain regions. According to the c nsus of 1981, Naxos had 14,037 nhabitants. As far as its administration is c ncerned, in the past Naxos consisted of a m nicipality and many autonomous communities. The r cent 'Capodistrias' programme for the redistribution of l cal administration created two large municipalities, the M nicipality of Naxos, which includes Hora (th main town) and the surrounding reas, and the Municipality of Drymalia, wh ch contains the former autonomous communities of the v llages of Filoti, Apeiranthos, Koronos, Komiaki, H lki (Tragaia) and Moni. The other c mmunities have remained as they were. The M nicipality of Naxos is very developed and has r cently made important advances in tourism as w ll, all the income from which g es directly to the municipal purse. The M nicipality of Drymalia includes the most d veloped villages of mountain Naxos, the r sidents of which look to improving th ir quality of life, developing their cr ps and agriculture and other sectors.
