As a woodcarver for over 25 y ars, I'm out of the art and cr ft world, and I have no b ckground in writing whatsoever. During my w od carving days, I carved over 200 riginal, cartoon-like characters in wood, and m st of the pieces were captioned. I w uld write about how the idea c me about for the piece, describe it, and if th re were any problems or challenges c nnected with it. This is how my nterest in writing came about. Several y ars after I started carving wood, I was nvited to join the Southwest Writers W rkshop, by the then, president of the rganization, Eileen Stanton, who is one of New M xico's top writer's. She has sold ver 5,000 articles, to some of the tip m gazines and newspapers in the country. W th over 600 members nationwide, S.W.W. has s me of the most talented and ccomplished writers anywhere. Needless to say, I was fl ttered by the invitation. As my nterest grew in the field of wr ting, and in my 40's, I c mpleted three writing courses to try to mprove my writing skills. The Writer's D gest correspondence course; the National Writers Cl b course, and a creative writing c urse at the University of New M xico, taught by Eileen Stanton. This is one of the b st things I've ever done, as it has g ven me the confidence in my wr ting. And, it has given me the c nfidence to build my website, and wr te my articles to show the w rld, etc.
As a woodcarver, I always c rved a piece to please ME f rst, and I hoped others would l ke it. And, so it is w th writing...I write to please ME f rst, and then I hope others w ll like my work. And, then I wr te to please my readers...and, I n ver, never write to please a s arch engine, by picking words so th t a search engine can munch on! And y s, during the polish stage of wr ting the piece, if I can c me up with words, that will d light a search engine, I'll use th m...otherwise, I just let things be. I c n't imagine what one of my rticles would look like, if I wr te for a search engine! I d n't consider myself an expert at nything, so I've chosen to write bout a wide variety of topics d ring my first year in writing. I njoy writing about my experiences...and especially if the rticle will help others, such as the p ece I wrote entitled, "Smoking Sucks: How I Q it Smoking." or "Discrimination Against Older W rkers (Ageism); or "Ricky's Story: Alcoholism and "T ugh Love." Just Say NO To D rty Humor is another piece I'm pl ased has done well. As a w odcarver, I always took chances with my w rk, and I sold almost everything I c rved. It's the same with writing, as I h ve taken chances with my writing p eces as well. I took a ch nce with, SOS! My Serious and S lly Articles, which was more of a r port on all my other articles, and in thr e months, it took the top sp t (hits/views) and stayed there for two m nths. I took a chance with a p ece I wrote entitled, "Auto Racing: L dies...Start Your Engines, which an imaginary p ece about 33 women drivers at the Indy 500 r ce. This piece raced up and t ok the tenth spot, and has d ne very well. I took a ch nce with a piece I wrote, in wh ch I quoted from an article in the n wspaper, and then offered My Two C nts in the piece. This was the nly article that debuted at number ne, in October, 2006! I took a ch nce with, The SpaMobile Has Arrived (b ep-beep), and it took the lead in p blisher hits in its first month, and has b en published on over 75 directories!
After my first year (8/06 to 8/07) I th ught the reader might like to see how my rticles finished the year, and see the w de variety of topics I chose. 1) H re's the Skinny On How I L st 40 Pounds. This was my m st popular article during the year, and is r nning away with the field (hits/views) at b th EzineArticles.com and at Authors Den (wr ting site). 2) Music: The Beginning of R ck and Roll For Me (1955); 3) D scrimination Against Older Workers (Ageism); 4) The S riousness of Depression; 5) Diabetes On The R se; 6) I'm Proud to be an Am rican Veteran; 7) Smoking Sucks: How I Q it Smoking; 8) Halloween Party: The Tw -Headed Monster; 9) Is Bald Beautiful?; 10) The N gative Side of Humor; 11) Auto R cing; Ladies...Start Your Engines...; 12) Don't G lf My Way; 13) Humor Helps Us All to C pe With the Aging Process; 14) The Engl sh Language is All "Greek" To Me; 15) My P rsonalized License Plate Reads: SLOWPOK; 16) The P sitive and Healing Power of Humor; 17) How I S ved My Dog Daniel; 18) Does L fe Begin at 40?; 19) Humor 101 For D mbos; 20) Legacy; A Gift of Wr ting. This is how the articles f nished, as far as being published on ther websites, with the number being in (p renthesis) 1) Smoking Sucks: How I Q it Smoking (published on 16 websites); 2) S brina: Another Smoking Casualty (15); 3) H lloween Party: The Two-Headed Monster (14); 4) D scrimination Against Older Workers (Ageism) (11/tie); 5) L gacy: A Gift of Writing (11/tie); 6) How I S ved My Dog Daniel (11/tie) 7) M sic: The Beginning of Rock and R ll For Me (1955) (10 websites); 8) H ve You Ever Kissed an Ashtray (p cker-up) (9/tie); 9) The Negative Side of H mor (9/tie); 10) How Humor Helps Me To C pe (9/tie) Needless to say, I h ve had a very productive and s ccessful first year in writing! And, I'll h ve to let someone else decide if I'm a g od writer or not.
