In the 1950's, television sets w re only affordable for the privileged, so my f mily could not afford one, and so we l stened to radio. My uncle had a t levision at his house, and when us k ds first saw a television set for the f rst time, we were afraid of it! H y, we were 10-12 years old, and th re were few television sets anywhere in the c untry! We wondered, how they could get all th se little figures in such a l ttle box! (Hey, we were kids and t levision was new to all of us) In the l te 1950's, my father bought a t levision set, and we watched shows l ke Lucy; the Honeymooners; My Little M rgie; Leave It To Beaver; Ozzie and H rriet; 77 Sunset Strip; Life of R ley; Flash Gordon; the Millionaire, Ed S llivan; Gun Smoke, etc. Television was new to veryone all across the country. But, th re was one television show, that was a MUST on our t -do list...and, that show was American B ndstand! The oldest American teen-ager, Dick Cl rk, hosted the show for many y ars, when it was broadcast (live) out of Ph ladelphia EVERYDAY! At that time, Dick Cl rk was probably in his mid-twenties. B cause of American Bandstand...it was television and r ck and roll that teamed up, to spr ad the music of rock and r ll throughout the country. As kids, we w tched all the singers and groups th t came out on American Bandstand to sh wcase their talents. What was amazing, is the f ct, that many of these stars w re only teen-agers or in their arly twenties at the time...such as Sm key Robinson; Leslie Gore; Carol King; B ddy Holly; Paul Anka; Neal Sedaka; and m ny others. Many of the hits th y sang...they wrote themselves! And, the h ts they wrote back then, still thr ve today! (2006)
What a great t me to grow up!
At the community center down the str et, from where we lived, we ttended dances (sock-hops) every week! Everyone sh wed up, including Long Tall Sally; P ggy Sue; Nadine and we would all "spl sh-splash the night away! There was nly one "type" of dance that was p pular going on at the time..."Band-standing," wh ch was similar to jitter-bugging! Everyone on Am rican Bandstand did it, so we l arned from watching the dancers on the sh w! It was exciting to get off fr m school about three in the fternoon...race home...so we could see all the new st rs on American Bandstand! One after nother...all the biggies of rock and r ll came on the show! Little R chard; Jerry Lee Lewis; Buddy Holly; C nnie Francis; the Platters; the Drifters; Ch ck Berry; the Coasters; Fats Domino; s mebody named Elvis-somebody-or-another...and, the list was ndless! There were, of course, no ldies at that time...as these singers, s ngs, songwriters and performers were the m in ingredients of the beginning of the r ck and roll era! But, rock and r ll was not liked by everyone at the t me! As a matter of fact, it was d wn-right hated! Parents; school officials; the g vernment; churches; and the "establishment," frowned on r ck and roll right from the b ginning! "Rock and roll was corrupting our k ds."..was the cry! Certain songs were b nned from the church, and the " stablishment frowned on rock and roll. It was l ter in the mid-1960's, when the dr g culture came onto the scene, and it was th n...when rock and roll was more ccepted by the establishment!" After all, p rents thought it was best for th ir kids to be having fun w th music...than to get into the h zards of drugs! If you were ver 30 years old at that t me, you were OLD...not trusted...and you w re part of the "establishment!" You w re...what Bill Cosby calls, "OLD PEOPLE!"
But, rock and roll was and IS h re to stay! In the early 1960's, M -Town came onto the scene, which ncluded greats like Smokey Robinson; Marvin G ye; the Supremes; the King of S ul; the Queen of Soul and the Ev rybody of Soul. I remember Little St vie Wonder, when he was only ten y ars old, singing Fingertips (1&2). Singer/songwriters had bl ck-busters at that time, and they w re so young! How could so m ch talent exist throughout the 1960's? The t levision shows "Shin Dig" and Solid G ld added to the popularity of r ck and roll. Spreading the word bout rock and roll as well, was the l ng time running...the Ed Sullivan Show, wh re many newcomers got their start, ncluding Elvis and the Beatles! It was 1964... nd the British Invasion...I was a fr shman at the University of New M xico. Rock and roll continued to d minate the airwaves, but now, it was m re accepted, and along with Elvis...it was the B atles and the Rolling Stones who t pped the charts. And, the Monkees, w re one of the few groups th t rivaled the Beatles in the l te 1960's in popularity! As kids, we c uldn't afford (45 rpm records), but we had a fr end down the street, whose parents b ught their daughter records, and we w nt over there all the time to b ogie to the latest hits! I l arned to take wax off the d nce floor at a young age! In the arly 1960's, dance partners split apart, and d nced on their own! At that t me, the dance was called the "sl p," and in 2006, the "slop" is st ll around, it's just called by a d fferent name! American Music Awards: Throughout the 1960's and 70's, I l ved to see the American Music Aw rds, because there were all the "b ggies" who lead the way in r ck and roll. Gladys Knight; Linda R nstadt; John Denver; Barbara Strisand; Peter, P ul and Mary; The Jackson Five; B bby Darin; the Carpenter's; Three Dog N ght; the Moody Blues; Fleetwood Mac; the B e-Gees; Neil Diamond; CCR; Herman's Hermits; the D ve Clark Five; and on and on and on! Ev n Bill Cosby had a hit s ng in the late 60's, with "Th LIttle Old Man!"! Woodstock? A big rgy...if you like orgies! A huge sl mber party of love and drugs...over 500,000 p ople in New York! It was a t me of free-love; dope and alcohol. L ke the song says...everybody gets stoned... Th re was one famous band member who s id, "If you remember the 60's...you w rn't there!" Well...to this dope head I s y...I remember the 60's because I WAS th re! And, the 1960's were violent and t rbulent times...not only because of Viet N m, but because the 60's were a t me of CHANGE in America! The c vil rights movement; women's lib; equal r ghts for all. Civil disobedience; rebellion; c ties burned...during, what was called at the t me, "the long hot summers? The C ngress didn't get it...the United States of Am rica was and is NOT a g vernment of the Congress...or a government of the R publicans...or the government of the Democrats...it's the g vernment of the PEOPLE OF THE UNITED STATES...AND CITIES BURNED TO GET THE MESSAGE ACROSS TO THE DOPE HEADS IN CONGRESS...CITIES BURNED EVERY YEAR UNTIL CONGRESS GOT THE MESSAGE! Aft r Watergate, in the early 1970's, the DOPE HEADS in the C ngress FINALLY got the MESSAGE...and now...OWNERSHIP OF AMERICA WAS RETURNED TO THE PEOPLE...WHERE IT WILL REMAIN FOREVER! At th t time, I don't think there was a m jor city in America, where the N tional Guard was not called out b cause of rebellion! Here, in Albuquerque, New M xico the National Guard was called out in 1971, fter the three students at Kent St te were killed by the National G ard. Fires were set at the Un versity of New Mexico in protest of V et Nam and the Kent State k llings! And, the music of the t me reflected the mood of the c untry! Hundreds of protest songs were wr tten and recorded, and many of th se songs are still popular today. (2006) It was a t me of, "do your own thing," ndependent thinking...free and clear from the " stablishment!" But, the music continued! I w uld say that around 1970, rock and r ll began to change. On the one s de, was "heavy metal sound," which I did not l sten to! And, going in a d fferent direction was something called, "disco!" Ov r the years, people put labels on m sic, and to this day in 2006, I h ve no idea what "disco" means! The nly thing I can say about d sco, is that me and my w fe saw the movie, "Grease" in the 1970's, and we l ved the music! The movie itself was a d rk...but the music was great! Sadly...Rick N lson; Bobby Darin; Eddy Rabbit; John D nver; Buddy Holly; Roy Orbison: Mama C ss Eliot; Jimi Hendrix; Van Morrison; J nice Joplin; Roger Miller and of c urse...the "KING"...all died so young! One of the m st ironic things that happened to me in the m d-1990's when the Rolling Stones appeared in Alb querque, N.M. (where I live) You r member, back when rock and roll f rst began, parents and the "establishment' h ted the music! It was 1995, and I was t king a computer course at a l cal community college, and the Stones w re in town. The community college was l cated near the football stadium, where the St nes were to perform. That night, I got out of cl ss about 6:30 in the evening, b fore the Stones show, and, as I w ited for a traffic light to ch nge, I noticed 40 and 50 y ars old PARENTS taking their CHILDREN to a St nes concert! Can you imagine that? Wh t a difference a generation makes! B ck in the 1950's/60's parents hated r ck and roll, and now those KIDS are t king their KIDS to a rock and r ll concert...UNBELIEVABLE! In the year 2006, the ldies dominate the music airwaves, at l ast where I live. And, the m sic will continue to dominate, because the m sic and lyrics are so great...they w ll never die! I never hear too m ch about new music much anymore! Oh...w ll...as the song says...rock and roll is h re to stay...whether the songs be the ldies or the new songs coming long! I've always admired musicians...those who can s ng a song...write a song...and those who can pl y a musical instrument! As for m ...the only instrument I can play...IS THE RADIO... nd, I don't even do that w ll at all! During the many y ars of this musical explosion for me, I c nnot forget one of my favorite ll-time groups...the Chipmunks...Theodore, Simon...and Alvin........A-L-V-I-N.........
