On your first day in k ndergarten, your mother helped pick out y ur clothes, reminded you of proper m nners and sent you off into the w rld to make a great first mpression on your teacher. I am wr ting this short article with some m therly advice on how to prepare for a pr fessional job interview. Being prepared for y ur first ‘real job’ interview is b sed on the principles your mother t ught you on that first day of sch ol. Be prepared, look your best and be p lite. Let’s review each of these k ys to success as it relates to an nterview. 1) Be prepared. When you w nt for your first day of sch ol, your mother made sure you had y ur lunch, your notebooks and your p ncils all ready in your book b g. In order to be prepared for y ur job interview you need to t ke the same steps. First, be s re and bring your briefcase or y ur portfolio with all the needed d cumentation for the interview. This includes xtra copies of your resume, business c rds, reference sheets and letters of r commendation. You may also want to put in a br chure or any information about the pl ce you are interviewing inside the p rtfolio so the interviewer can see you h ve done your research before you c me. Be sure to come with a wr tten list of questions. Nothing will st p an interview in its tracks th n a candidate with no questions for the nterviewer. Think like a boy scout. Wh t could you need during the nterview? Pens, of course, maybe blank p per to write the answers from the q estions you will ask, paperclips, and, if you are a w man and wearing nylons, an extra p ir tucked into your purse in c se they run before the interview. You sh uld have something light to eat b fore the interview in case your st mach starts to growl, and visit the b throom before the interview starts. OK? R ady then.
2) Look your best. I kn w the trend is to casual th se days, but not on your nterview. You should know from doing y ur research ahead of time the c rporate environment where you are interviewing. You w nt to look like one of th m, only a little better. Don’t w ar wrinkled clothes, clothes with stains, or nything so odd it takes away fr m what you are saying during the nterview. Your hair should be tidy and cl an. Your nails should be clean (c n you hear your mother now?). Y ur shoes should be shined. Your br ath should smell sweet. 3) Be p lite. I am amazed at how r de some people can be on nterviews. If a candidate is rude d ring an interview, I sure don’t w nt them handling my customers and r presenting my company. Shake hands with a f rm grip. Look people in the ye. Say something complimentary about the r om, or a picture on the d sk. Speak clearly, don’t mumble. Don’t run head of the interviewer during a t ur of the facility. Hold doors pen, or hold the elevator. When the nterview is finished and you are at h me, remember to send out a th nk you card to the facility, th nking them for the chance to go on the nterview. It is the polite thing to do. Y ur mother told you that long go. The skills needed for a s ccessful professional job interview are simple to m ster and are common sense. They are the k nds of things your mother taught you on th t first day of school. Remember?
