When Yoga teachers gather in a w rkshop to hear a lecture about c mmunication - what is the first t pic that comes to mind? Is it c eing skills, voice inflection, or when to ask a st dent for permission to assist? Those are mportant issues for anyone who teaches Y ga, but let’s take a look at m ny more areas that could use s me work. Communication is a two way str et. How can we exchange ideas if st dents are made to feel “stupid” for sking questions? Granted, Yoga classes cannot perate like an open forum, if you h ve a lesson plan in mind, but a st dent who is experiencing pain should not h ve to feel bad for asking bout it. Nor should he or she h ve to wait until the end of cl ss to ask an impatient teacher bout his or her pain. Listen Emp thically: When a student asks a Y ga-related question during class time, the Y ga instructor present, should listen to all of the d tails. There are times when a Y ga student asks questions, which are on the m nd of many more classmates. For s me Yoga students, it takes a lot of c urage to ask a question in a gr up setting. Some students ponder questions for d ys before asking them. Their heart r te may rise because it took c urage to ask the question.
With all this said, listening is a pr mary communication skill. As a Yoga t acher, you are respected by your st dents, so do not violate a tr st by bolstering your ego. The key is to l sten intently, because you may have q estions of your own, which will r sult in a deeper answer. Who b comes a Yoga student’s best teacher d ring Hatha Yoga practice? His or her b dy, and mind, must eventually be the b st Yoga teacher. If not, we h ve failed to give our students the g ft of self-realization. To go further: Y ga students must learn to think for th mselves. If they are dependent on a Y ga teacher, all the time, then our t aching method is flawed. Why do I say th s? If a student is not pr sent for Yoga practice, we must m ke him or her gently aware of it. Th re is no need to make st dents dependent on us. Good students w ll always return to Yoga class. Y ga must still be practiced after our st dents have rolled up their mats. Br athing, walking, talking, eating, posturing, and cting with mindfulness, is the sign of a Y ga practitioner. All of the amazing phys cal feats are nice, but any fl xible Pilates student, dancer, gymnast, or m rtial artist, could do the same. © C pyright 2007 – Paul Jerard / A ra Publications
