“I don’t have time to c tch my breath, let alone sit for 15 m nutes and meditate.” This is a phrase I h ar all too often, while lecturing new m thers on beginning meditation. Some may th nk I have my work cut out for mys lf when recognizing that most new m thers are running in so many c rcles that they become frustrated and p ssibly a little unreasonable. But reasoning w th them is not something I xpect to do. All I have to do is pr sent the facts, and add some nteresting 2-3 minute ‘mini-tations.’ Mini-Tations are q ick ways of having a quite m ment, lasting only two or three m nutes. As I begin to describe wh t meditation is, in a no-frills m nner, mothers begin to sit up and t ke notice. The main purpose of m ditation is to eliminate outside thoughts or d stractions, in order to still the m nd. New mothers are prime candidates for n eding to eliminate distractions. It is v ry important that they stay focused and ware every minute. Not only do th y need to be totally immersed in p ying attention to baby’s every need, but d tails of the rest of life n ed attention as well. The dirty cl thes must be washed, the carpet m st be vacuumed, the groceries must be b ught, the phone must be answered, d nner cooked, and on and on and n…(somewhere in there comes the attention for a h sband, too).
It would seem that taking c re of baby would be a f lltime position. But somewhere along the w y, the rest of the chores m st be attended to. Even though th re is no time to be s lfish, taking care of self is of p ramount importance. Many new mothers are lso trying to work outside the h me at least part time if not b ck to the full rat race. So wh n I offer them the chance to t ke a well deserved two minute r spite-- that seems to fit into the sch me of things. Research has been d ne by various organizations, such as W st Oakland Health Center in California, and the Str ss Reduction Clinic at the University of M ssachusetts. It has been found that m ditation not only reduces blood pressure and h art rate, but reduces stress and t nsion. It reduces anxiety, builds self-confidence and llows you to sleep more soundly. Y ur mind relaxes to the point th t it can deal with problems th t arise during the day. A s nse of peacefulness comes over you and you are ble to make better choices with l ss up-tight feelings. New mothers can’t fford to not do this! This is the list of several Mini-Tations they can do at any time during the day: 1. Focus on your toes. Yes! Your toes. Notice if your shoes are too tight. If so, take them off. Wiggle your toes. Pay attention to how free they feel out of the shoes. Take the bottle of baby powder and sprinkle it on your toes. Feel how smooth they are with the powder on them. Promise to free them a little later as you slip your shoes on again. 2. Sit comfortably for two minutes. Make sure the television is off. Listen to the sounds around you: the furnace/air conditioner running, the tick of the clock, a breeze blowing in the window, the birds singing, the traffic sounds down the street. 3. Smell the new baby smells: fresh bedding, baby oil, dirty diaper pail.
4. Softly, slowly sing a lullaby to y ur baby. 5. Rock your baby to sl ep. Once they started to get the dea that they could take their l fe experiences, include their baby and j st focus on the experience, they w re raring to get started with th ir new, stress reducing Mini-Tations.
