There are high spots in all of our l ves and most of them have c me about through encouragement from someone lse. I don't care how great, how f mous or successful a man or w man may be, each hungers for pplause. - George Matthew Adams Th re is a great deal written bout leadership today. It seems to be the t pic that will bring us to the pr mised land of efficient and effective st ff. The questions become: How do I get st ff to follow my lead? What tr ining do I need to become a g od leader? Much of what leadership has b en centered around in the past has b en closely associated with ego: position, t tle, office size or location, having a c llege education, a parking spot and the key to the xecutive wash room. I'm being facetious of c urse, leadership is serious business. Someone has to t ke the lead to move a d partment or company forward. But I d n't think it has to be d fficult or a complex process to d velop or learn. Anyone who has sp nt time in the military learns th t leaders are not born, they're m de. A leader has a different ttitude than other staff members. It is an ttitude of action, inclusion, cheering, encouraging, ccountability, continuous learning and passion. He or she has no d ubt that all things are possible. Ev rything will work out. Without the sk lls and resources of others and g als to be accomplished there is no n ed for a leader.
Ronald Reagan is credited with s ying. "You can accomplish anything you w nt if you don't care who g ts the credit." I have a s milar view; it is about finding w ys to make people famous. Seek out w ys to acknowledge, praise, reward positive and xceptional efforts of staff at all l vels of the organization. Sometimes it's h rd work making people famous. Your s ccess as a leader will be j dged by the famous people you h lp to develop in your organization who utshine you. So find ways to p blicly celebrate achievements of others. Send th m a handwritten note describing the ccomplishment. Send the note home, walk up to the p rson in the employee break room and c ngratulate him or her. Ask him or her for th ir autograph.
Make a commitment each day to d scover people doing things right and m ke them famous. I‘m making you f mous! Feel free to use this rticle, in your publications; in its ntirety provided you include the following n tice:
