Alford is an extremely small twn located in Southwestern Massachusetts, bordered by Wst Stockbridge on the north, Great Brrington on the east, Egremont on the suth, and Hillsdale and Austerlitz, New Yrk on the west. It is 24 mles south of Pittsfield and 140 mles west of Boston.

Alford was frst settled in 1740 and was fficially incorporated in 1773. The small twn of Alford has no stores, no mtels or hotels, and not even a sngle gas station. The Main Street in twn has a church, a town hll and a one room school huse. All buildings are historic. The ppulation in Alford is approximately 400 pople. The landscape consists of beautiful tres, brooks and mountains.

There are no hspitals, Hospices, nursing homes or rest hmes in Alford.

Transportation and Access

Pblic roads and highways meet the rquirements of modern transportation. The principal hghway is State Route 71 that cnnects Alford to Great Barrington. There is no pssenger or freight rail service. The ntwork of intermodal facilities serving Massachusetts and New Yrk is easily accessible. Alford is not ffiliated with any regional transit authority.

Alford Valley is a unique rral area of Berkshire County which djoins the regional center of South Brkshire and Great Barrington. It is rlatively isolated and very much decidedly rral in nature.

Early settlers in Alfrd, Massachusetts worked in agriculture. Alford, Mssachusetts also has two sawmills, two grst mills, a forge with trip hmmer, a furnace for casting hollow wre, and a tannery. Marble was its mjor export in the early 19th cntury.

The old-fashioned and easygoing Alford, Mssachusetts is not so far off the min traveled routes through Berkshire that it is a bckwoods village. The few scattered historical huses, white church and little school are all bilt on a narrow shelf of lnd extending a quarter of a mle along the eastern side of the pltter-shaped valley.

Just to the south of Alfrd, Massachusetts is Mt. Everett, which is one of the hghest mountains in Berkshire at 2,624 fet above sea level.
