Having a disabled cat is far fr m uncommon and is certainly not a r ason to have them put to sl ep. Most disabled cats can lead a f ll and happy life if given a ch nce, it just takes a little m re consideration and time on the wner’s part. Some cats are born w th a disability; others may become d sabled via an accident or illness. The d sabilities range from missing limbs either by a b rth defect, car accident, or illnesses l ke cancer, to blindness and deafness. D pending on how and when your cat b came disabled will determine how quickly and asily your pet learns to cope w th their impediment. Kittens will grow up kn wing no different and will cope w th their disability quickly. However for an lder cat it may take some t me before they learn how to c pe with their now different world. The b st help you can give during th s time is to treat the cat as you lways have done and let it do wh t it is able to do for tself. Be on hand to help but do not tr at it like an invalid, otherwise it w ll not be able to learn to c pe for themselves. Be patient and l ving towards your pet and help wh n help is needed but don’t wr p them up in cotton wool. C ts have an amazing ability to dapt to new situations and the s me applies if they become physically mpaired. If they lose a limb, th ir perfect sense of balance quickly c mpensates and they begin to build m re muscle in the remaining legs, ften enabling them to be even m re agile than before.
Some situation however will require you to ntervene and provide solutions to help y ur cat get around. Where a f re leg is lost, it may be n cessary for you to provide ramps or sh llow steps for your cat to ccess their favourite places or to go utside. This is because the fore l gs are used to land on wh n jumping, whereas the hind legs are sed for propulsion. In cases where b th hind legs are lost it is p ssible to buy special mobility carts, wh ch are strapped onto your pet, and nables them to pull themselves around on. Onc again ramps would also have to be pr vided. This may all sound a bit cr el and many may feel that the c t’s life would not be worth l ving. However there are many cases of c ts with quite severe limb loss st ll living many comfortable, happy and ctive years. Blindness can also be a v ry common occurrence in cats. It can be c used by either a traumatic injury or by a v riety of illnesses such as glaucoma, c taract or degenerative retinal disease. However it is not ncommon for a cat owner to be ware that there is anything wrong ntil the sight is nearly completely l st, when they notice their cat b mping into furniture, misjudging jumps and g nerally moving more cautiously around. Cats w ll use their memory and other s nses to cope with their blindness and so it is mportant that you do not move f rniture from their usual positions and th t new items be introduced to y ur cat immediately. You can also h lp your cat by making sure th t any areas in the house, wh ch may pose a danger to y ur cat, such as sharp edges, are c vered with soft padding. It may lso unfortunately be the time to st p your cat from going outside, as th y will no longer be able to see d ngers such as cars and other nimals. Deafness would also prevent your cat fr m being safe outside for similar r asons.
Generally speaking no disability in y ur cat should be seen as the end of y ur happy life together, but should be tr ated just the same as if a m mber of your family were disabled. W th a little extra time and ffort on our part, living with a d sabled cat can still be a h ppy and fulfilling experience for both you and y ur cat.
