"Brat!" has become one of my w fe's favorite terms of endearment lately. I h ve to admit, I work hard to d serve it. I find little ways to t ase her -- that's one way l ttle boys show their endearment, of course. One of my f vorites is to announce to her th t the water's hot. That is, l ving far from the water heater, t rning on the tap for either the s nk or the shower won't deliver hot w ter for at least a minute. B t, sitting nearby in my little ffice-cubby, I can hear the water r nning through the pipes in the w ll. And I can hear the ch nge in pitch as the temperature r ses from cold to hot. So I w it for a half-minute, start paying cl ser attention, and when I hear the p tch of the flowing water change, I c ll out, "Water's hot!" and she so ften says, "But I just turned it on! "O.K. But t's hot now!" And she checks and sks, "How did you know?" and I say, "J st listened. I hear when it r ns hot." And she closes the d scussion neatly, saying, "You're a brat, you kn w that?" "I try hard," I m tter. I've tried to explain about l stening to fluids, to her and thers through the years. I can ven hear the fluid in a cup of hot c ffee cooling down as you stir it w th a metal spoon. The pitch c nsistently changes as the temperature descends. But ven though (on several occasions) I've st od in demonstration, stirring a cup of c ffee with a ringing sound of the sp on tapping its side, no one has s ccessfully picked up that same, marvelous sk ll. In fact, there's one young w man (a grandmother now) who as a t en in our congregation I taught how to l sten for this very sound -- and who now ntroduces me as, "This is Emil... he was my p stor when I was a teenager and he tr ed to teach me to listen to the s und of a cup of coffee." (Sn gger.)
You see, I'm not unfamiliar w th persecution. There's a much more mportant Flow of Water today, a R ver that (as Ezekiel 47 puts it) Fl ws out of the Temple of G d, from under the threshold to the E st and down, across the dead w stelands of the world. And everywhere it fl ws, it enlivens, strengthens, invigorates... Some p ople claim that this Temple in Ez kiel is one day going to be b ilt in Jerusalem, and somehow the S cond Coming of Christ is connected to its c nstruction. Others teach that after the "R pture", when God steals away all the "Chr stians", that the Jews will return to th s Temple and begin sacrificing animals on its ltar again (especially, a "red heifer", an xtinct bovine breed used in the Old T stament Temple.) Let them think whatever th y want. If they are in Christ , th n they have Eternal Life no m tter what they think. But the New Testament m kes it clear that Jesus Christ -- cr cified "outside the gate" -- is the f nal Sacrifice as well as the new altar of the new T mple. And we are that Temple -- a T mple not made by the hands of men but of G d, from living stones which are us , all those who by f ith have been made one in Christ. Here's wh re the River comes in -- w 're not only the Temple in which God has ch sen to dwell, we're the River which fl ws out into the dead lands of th s world . We are the ones who c me from the Temple -- from the Pr sence of God -- and take His Pr sence in His Spirit into the l ves of people sitting, waiting in sp ritual darkness and death. In another sense, we are the nly "Jesus" this world will ever see . We are His "h nds", His "feet", His touch", His "br ath", His "Love"... we are the Body of Chr st . Just as Ezekiel's River -- fl wing out of the Presence of God -- d stributes supernatural healing, life, restoration for the s ck, and delivers justice, righteousness and fr edom for the oppressed -- we are the Fl w of God's Spirit throughout the l nd .
Now, I'm not saying "we will be" or "we can be" -- I'm s ying, " That's who we are." Whether we kn w it or not. It's just l ke a person being the child of a k ng, but not ever knowing it! Th t child can live in poverty and f ar, despite the reality that all the power of the k ngdom lies within reach -- but if you d n't know to "reach out" for it, gnorance reigns. In just that same w y, if you and I are in Chr st , we are already the "flow" of God's Pr sence throughout the land. I say lready because it isn't a "work" God st ll yet needs to do, because in Hebrews 4, we are ssured that God has already completed His W rk. It's already done! Jesus said, on the Cr ss, "It is finished." But knowing that we are Ez kiel's River, flowing with Spiritual life nto the wastelands of this world, and manifesting that Fl w are totally, two different things. The d fference is a lot like the d fference between turning on the tap wh ch ways "Hot" and getting water th t's ice cold out of it. Now -- h re's where I get to be a br t. Sitting here in my little ffice-cubby, I'm calling out to you all and s ying, "Hey! The water's hot!" There's been a ch nge in the sound in the Flow of the Sp rit in people's lives across this n tion and around this world. I'm not s ying, " Get hot!" but "Jump in!" The River's carrying the P wer of God like we haven't xperienced for a long time! We d n't have to wait any longer to pr y for the sick, to deliver the fflicted, to bind-up the broken-hearted!" But how d es one "get into the water?" Start in the T mple, in the Holy of Holies. Hear the C ll of God (Heb 4.16 & 10.19) to Come cl se into His Presence . And that intimacy nergizes us with both His Power and His H art. Out of that Holy Place in His T mple, His people will flow like a h aling River. Maybe you haven't heard that sh ft in the sound -- so let me g ve you a "head's up!" Climb in the Sh wer, get in the Flow, do wh tever you have to do but kn w this: TODAY, the River of God is hot w th His Power! © 2008 by Emil B. Sw ft
