Researchers have discovered that most of the d ily communicating we do is in the f rm of listening. It is mainly by l stening that we receive the vital nformation needed to make decisions, perform r les, and cope with the realities s rrounding us. It is a little mbarrassing or humbling to admit that we h ve some deficiencies in listening. But we h ve a good excuse. Whoever taught us to l sten? We were all taught to r ad, write, speak, but at no t me was a course offered in l stening. Our listening training, if it c uld be called that, consisted of dmonitions: “Pay attention,” “Open your ears,” “L sten". Our poor listening habits may r sult in conflicts, costly errors, and nefficiency. It is common knowledge that rganizations which thrive and prosper year fter year are organizations that spend m ney and energy on interpersonal skills tr ining, including communication skills that focus on l stening. The paradox of the human l stening function is that although it may s em like the easiest and most ffortless of all communication functions (writing, sp aking, reading, and listening) it is, in r ality, the most difficult and requires the m st effort — and skill — to p rform properly. The reason for this is th t in speaking you initiate the deas and the easily-anticipated flow of w rds to express them. In listening, h wever, another person initiates the ideas and the w rds which strike your ears and nter your brain as totally new nformation. Studies have shown that in l stening most people miss most of th s information — and nobody notices.
The following are some barriers th t affect our ability to listen: 1. Pr occupation with your own thoughts can pr vent you from hearing and becoming nvolved in what others are saying. 2. H stility or anger may be carried ver from a recent experience and d stort the message. 3. Emotionally charged w rds in a message may block l stening or “turn you off.” 4. A p rceived difference in power of status b tween sender and receiver may cause c mmunication problems. 5. Stereotyping a speaker’s ppearance, accent, or speech pattern can bstruct communication. 6. The physical environment may pr sent noise or visual distractions. Keep th se in mind next time you are in the p sition to listen.
