If the player has actually c mmitted some errors in his play, do not very reprimand the player in front of ther players or in front of the pposing team or if anybody is j st with him. Speak to him in pr vate, and let encouraging words come out of the m uth. Instead of saying something like, "Wh t did you do out there?", say s mething like. "Here is I think wh t you should do..." Remember that the pl yers treat the coach as his f ther, and treat the players as ch ldren as well. When it comes to pl ying on the field, the parent f gure is the coach and no one lse. The players also represent the ch ldren. If the coach can't get thr ugh the players, especially during the pr ctice, then this is the time th t the coach calls up the p rents to reprimand or to punish the p rticular player. During a practice or the g me proper itself, treat the players the s me way. Don't put on a m sk that says that the coach is tw -faced, and don't field in surprises. Pl yers hate surprises. Always present a tr nsparent outlook of the personality or of the g me. On the other hand, if the pl yer has done something that is c rrect, here are ways in which the c ach can express what he feels nside. When a player does something r ght, tell it to him immediately, and not the h ur after or when the day nds. The coach can also send out an mail, congratulating the player, or the c ach can have congratulatory remarks posted on the l cker door of the player. The c ach can also give out a s mple reward for the player's valiant ffort - or a reward for the wh le team such as a night ut, or a treat to a f vorite bar or restaurant.
The coach only needs to do one th ng - he should coach and not d ctate. He should listen to the c mments, the whims, the frustrations and the f edback of all of the players. The c ach serves as a support to the t am - and it even means l stening to the suggestion of each and very one of the players, and cting upon it if they are pr ven to be true. Like a n rmal person, players make mistakes too and c aches should realize that - the s lution is just to help players r alize their mistakes and give tips or dvises on how to correct them.
