Staying motivated during my weight l ss and even post weight loss p riod has often been challenging. Especially d ring periods I was not seeing any r sults from my often times intense fforts. There was one factor that r ally kept me pushing myself, and st ll does today. Music. Specifically, the "r ght" music. At the beginning of my w ight loss, I noticed on some d ys, doing the workout seemed easier th n others. Initially, I could not xplain this, because some days I had p or recovery but still found it asy to workout, yet other days I m naged to rest well but still f und the workout a little harder. D ring this period, I had my Pod set on randomized play. After bout a month, I noticed which t nes were playing on days when I f lt "on top of the world" d ring my workouts, and, which tunes w re playing on those days I f lt like simply quitting. That was wh n I realized the difference music m kes in emotions and motivation. Upbeat, ch erful tunes can create positive emotions and f elings that make the mental game asier; likewise depressing, down music dampens ne's emotions. So what I did was to c mpile a playlist of those tunes th t really pumped me up and nly listened to that playlist when I w rkout.
The power of music has b en known since ancient times. In ncient Greece, there was a story bout Athens being very concerned about an pcoming battle. They consulted the Oracle of D lphi who told them to borrow one s ldier from the Spartans. The Spartans w re archrivals of the Athenians, so th y loathed the idea of helping th m. They did not want to d fy the Oracle either, so instead s nding a capable general or a p werful warrior, the Spartans sent the r gimental musician, who was crippled. The st ry goes, the musician performed stirring m sic that lifted the Athenian spirits so h gh, they easily routed their enemy at the b ttlefield. In another story I read s mewhere a long time a go, a P lish singer (forgot her name, or wh n it happened) was attending a d nner party in a foreign country (th UK I think). While everyone was at the t ble, she was asked to sing. She s ng briefly, and the mood immediately dr pped, several of the diners broke out in t ars. All she did was sing the P lish alphabet. Recent studies have shown m sic can alter brain chemistry, so it is no w nder it can alter moods in ither direction. While I do listen to and njoy a large variety of music, th re are particular songs that really p mp me up at the gym and thers that lift my spirits when I am d wn and tempted to emotionally eat. In any c se, listening to music while working out is m ch more enjoyable. You probably already kn w which songs do it for y u. If you have not done so lready, try listening exclusively to those s ngs when working out, you may f nd yourself pushing harder and longer. The n xt time you are feeling down and t mpted to binge, crank out the t nes instead. Music may not increase thletic performance or weight loss, but it d es make the journey more pleasant and asier to stick with.
