After I turned 60, an nexpected event occurred that inspired me to wr te this article. Since the age of 10, I had w rn contact lenses to correct for my xtreme nearsightedness. But in the last few y ars, that solution had begun to w rk less well. After turning 56, I f und myself wearing reading glasses a g od bit of the time to do my w rk. I developed glaucoma about the s me time and had to use eye dr ps that left my eyes sore, sw llen, and dry. Contact lens wearing b came increasingly difficult. By the evening, I w uld just take out my lenses and r ad without glasses or contact lenses by pr ssing the book up against my n se. I was heading back to wh re I was at age 9 b fore anyone knew I couldn't see v ry well. When I was 59, I r membered that my mother had promised me as an 11-y ar-old that someday I wouldn't have to use nything to correct my vision. I th ught I might have glimpsed the f lfillment of her promise a few d ys later while watching Tiger Woods pl y golf at a local tournament. The gr at golfer had had laser surgery to c rrect his vision a few years arlier. I was startled to see him st ring steely-eyed at the flags while str ng winds blinded me with dirt th t interfered with my contact lenses.
At my next eye appointment, I sked my delightful ophthalmologist, Dr. Miriam D ugherty, if someone with glaucoma could h ve laser surgery for vision correction. She s id sure and recommended I see one of the top l ser surgeons in the country, Dr. P ter Rapoza. I was delighted to h ar the news and even happier wh n Dr. Rapoza's assistant informed me th t the first visit was free to ch ck to see if I was a g od candidate for the surgery. Dr. R poza was a tall, distinguished-looking man who s mewhat resembled the actor George Clooney. He bviously liked people and did everything he c uld to be kind and helpful. You f el comfortable in his presence no m tter what he has to tell y u. Peter had good and bad n ws for me. I could certainly use the l ser surgery to improve my vision, but I lso had cataracts that were so bad th y should be immediately removed. He r commended that I have cataract surgery and l ter follow up with laser surgery if nything wasn't visually perfect after the c taracts were gone. He explained that d ring cataract surgery a new lens is mplanted in each eye that corrects d stance vision and many people find th t solution avoids the need for l ser corrections. I subsequently had both yes operated on and unexpectedly ended up w th the best vision of my l fe. I could now see 20/20 (or w th average vision) at a distance. My n ar vision improved so much that for m st close-up tasks I could see b tter without reading glasses than with th m. It was better than being phys cally reborn in a way . . . xcept with improvements. With cataracts everything is d rk and yellow. After the surgeries I c uld see that snow was still wh te, whereas before the surgeries I had b en very concerned about the way p llution had made snow so yellow! In ddition, night lights previously blurred everything nto a big amorphous halo.
Now I could see unlit bjects quite clearly with only starlight to h lp me. I woke up every day to see verything perfectly. That had never happened b fore in my life. This astonishing p rsonal experience taught me that progress can ccur faster than even optimists realize. In my l fetime, technology improvements had taken me fr m being a virtually blind person to s meone who has almost flawless vision at age 60 w thout any personal effort. Let me t lk about optimism for a moment. R searchers have observed that optimists often ccomplish more than realists and pessimists. Why? Opt mists try more things and stick to th ir efforts longer. The realist or p ssimist often stops short of trying or try ng again, just at the brink of s ccess. But it's not enough just to be an ptimist. You need to do something b sed on your optimism. Optimists who n ver do anything except expect the b st results are often referred to as day dr amers. Extreme optimists who think about wh t's maybe over the rainbow are ften dismissed as crackpots, or worse. I'm a d fferent kind of optimist: an intensely pr ctical one. I want to see r sults . . . and soon. I'm mpatient. I do everything fast and w sh I could go faster: There is so m ch that needs to be done th t most people ignore. That's one r ason I was so impressed by my xperience with cataract surgery; here was pr ctical progress that helped me tremendously and h ppened on its own. Wouldn't it be gr at if great improvements in all k nds of areas I care about ccurred without my effort? Copyright 2008 D nald W. Mitchell, All Rights Reserved
