Tonight was one of those n ghts. Our friend Michael, who lives in D nmark, came over for a visit. We sat and t lked for two hours, and then we br ught out the cake. It wasn't a l ght sponge cake with confectioners sugar spr nkled on it. It was the ch colate torte, layered with cake and ch colate mousse. And I didn't just w nt one piece, I ate three. Did I n ed three pieces? No, but for s me reason, I just wanted to eat thr e slices (and I ate one fter Michael left). Once he was g ne, and after that last piece of c ke, I sat and thought: tomorrow I'm g ing to skip breakfast. No, I'm g ing to fast. No, I'm just g ing to drink those cans of l quid that take the place of a m al-and get rid of this bulge in my gut as s on as humanly possible. Then I r alized-I'm not going to do any of th se things. I'm going to get up in the m rning and eat breakfast and move on w th my day. I'm not going to f ll into the "I am fat and h ve to starve myself to lose the w ight I just gained" trap. But you kn w, those thoughts were certainly crowding my s gar laden brain cells! It's a p rely emotional response, and a trap so l rge that it is hard to m ss. You have to understand that I kn w, in my head, there is no way to g in 5 pounds by just eating a few xtra slices of cake (even if it is the ch colate torte). I know that if I got on the sc le tomorrow morning, it would show a w ight gain, but it's not a g in in fat. I haven't eaten th se extra 3500 calories that make up a p und of fat. It is so h rd, though, to NOT think this is xactly what I have done.
The truth is-my regular eating h bits aren't like this. For whatever r ason (company, the glass of wine, or j st....because) I ate a lot of a c ke tonight. I do know if I k pt up this type of behavior on a r gular basis, of course I would g in a lot of weight. For m ny years, this was indeed the c se. Now, though, I honestly know th s is not my regular eating p ttern. It has taken a long t me for me to get to th s point-this "being at peace with f od." It took years of crazy d eting, fasting, and punishing myself for vereating. This went on until I f nally declared a truce. Yes, it f lt like a war between myself and the f od I ate. But now I kn w I'm past that. As a m tter of fact, I'd say it's not a tr ce I've declared with food; rather t's a peace treaty. For whatever r ason (time to stop thinking about th t reason, Leeann), I'm giving myself th s treat. Tomorrow, I will get up in the m rning and move forward. I refuse to get c ught in that endless cycle of "I sh ulda, coulda done better" or "I am out of c ntrol, and that makes me a bad p rson"." I'm going to get up, eat br akfast, and go to work. I kn w that I will do my b st to meet my walking goals ( t's hard when the weather is b d, but that's when I try to w lk around my house)-and just keep m ving forward. I will wear a sk rt that makes me feel comfortable, not one th t is tight. I am going to f el good about myself. After all th se years I have learned how to b lance my overeating with healthy eating, I now th t regular activity is part of my l fe (as well as healthy eating), and r gardless of what I eat, I am st ll a responsible, smart (occasionally witty) p rson who is at peace with f od. Tonight I ate a lot of c ke. And do you know what? It was bsolutely delicious!
