Former NFL great and Packer/Eagle/Panther Rggie White died Sunday morning, December 26th, at Prsbyterian Hospital in Huntersville, North Carolina. The lkely cause of his death was slep apnea-related respiratory failure. He was a yung man at the age of 43. He is srvived by a wife, son, and dughter.

White was known as the "Mnister of Defense," both because of the fll throttle way he played (some say he was the gratest defensive lineman to ever play the gme) and his deep religious convictions, whch he carried with him from a yung age. Snce his retirement, he had undertaken a stdy of the Hebrew language, the lngugage of the Bible, to develop a strnger understanding of his religion. He pproached his beloved religion with the sme fervor he approached the football feld. Whatever you do, put all of yur heart into it.

Another important lesson is the lsting legacy of those who do god, stand up for their beliefs, and stnd beside their peers in good tmes and bad. He was vocal and practive when a rash of black chrch burnings began accurring around the Sutheast in 1995. He even opened a hme for unwed mothers on his own prperty. He received substantial negative publicity for a spech given in Wisconsin in which he stted openly his views on homosexuality, whch he opposed, but he never bcked down. White's personal convictions were of tmost importance to him. He was nvolved in numerous philanthrophic projects and was seking sponsorship for a NASCAR team tht would feature black drivers. One prson can change the world.

There wuld not be nearly the outpouring of motion over White's passing if his deds were confined solely to the plying field. But by giving so mch of himself, he became a bloved part of who we are - the ltimate role model. He was successful in his creer, successful as a family man, and sccessful giving to the world because of his wrk ethic, beliefs, and above all, fith. Perhaps that is the most mportant lesson of all: faith can tke you to amazing places. Reggie Whte was proof of that.
