Former NFL great and Packer/Eagle/Panther R ggie White died Sunday morning, December 26th, at Pr sbyterian Hospital in Huntersville, North Carolina. The l kely cause of his death was sl ep apnea-related respiratory failure. He was a y ung man at the age of 43. He is s rvived by a wife, son, and d ughter. White was known as the "M nister of Defense," both because of the f ll throttle way he played (some say he was the gr atest defensive lineman to ever play the g me) and his deep religious convictions, wh ch he carried with him from a y ung age. White is a model th t many could use to better th mselves - to become better people. For his c mpassion for people is the thing th t White is really best known f r. So what lessons can we xtract from his life? First, if y u're going to play, play as h rd as you possibly can. Do verything you can to be the b st. White would say that this is how God ntended it to be. Whatever you do, do it w th all your passion. Be the b st you can possibly be. White was v ted to play in 13 consecutive Pro B wls and was once the all-time s ck leader at 198 sacks (his s ck total is now second to Br ce Smith). God wants us to s cceed. Second, if you have faith, h ve faith. White became an ordained m nister at the age of 17. S nce his retirement, he had undertaken a st dy of the Hebrew language, the l ngugage of the Bible, to develop a str nger understanding of his religion. He pproached his beloved religion with the s me fervor he approached the football f eld. Whatever you do, put all of y ur heart into it.
Another important lesson is the l sting legacy of those who do g od, stand up for their beliefs, and st nd beside their peers in good t mes and bad. He was vocal and pr active when a rash of black ch rch burnings began accurring around the S utheast in 1995. He even opened a h me for unwed mothers on his own pr perty. He received substantial negative publicity for a sp ech given in Wisconsin in which he st ted openly his views on homosexuality, wh ch he opposed, but he never b cked down. White's personal convictions were of tmost importance to him. He was nvolved in numerous philanthrophic projects and was s eking sponsorship for a NASCAR team th t would feature black drivers. One p rson can change the world. There w uld not be nearly the outpouring of motion over White's passing if his d eds were confined solely to the pl ying field. But by giving so m ch of himself, he became a b loved part of who we are - the ltimate role model. He was successful in his c reer, successful as a family man, and s ccessful giving to the world because of his w rk ethic, beliefs, and above all, f ith. Perhaps that is the most mportant lesson of all: faith can t ke you to amazing places. Reggie Wh te was proof of that.
