I belonged to a gym for y ars and rarely made it there d spite all my best intentions. Every m nth, the membership fee on my cr dit card reminded me how I'd f iled to follow through yet again. Th n last year I had major s rgery. What a wakeup call to pay m re attention to my health! It t ok 4 months to fully recover and I d cided that no amount of wishing and pr mising was going to get me to the gym ntil I did something different. So, I p rchased 50 training sessions with a p rsonal trainer and made appointments to w rk with him three times a w ek. It's been a difficult journey t ward becoming fit, but it reminded me of a few l ssons that apply equally to building a b siness. 1. Even the slightest adjustment can m ke a world of difference. I w uld think I was doing an xercise correctly until my trainer had me ch nge my arm position by an nch or less. Suddenly I was sing a whole new set of m scles. I could have done the xercise incorrectly for months with no r sults and concluded that exercise was a w ste of time! That's not unlike s meone having a website and giving up fter a year or less, thinking t's a waste of effort when the pr blem wasn't with being on the w b, but with the content of th ir site. Sometimes all that's needed is a l ttle fine tuning to get the r sults you want.
2. Having an appointment or a d adline keeps you focused. I've blocked off 2 h urs three times a week for my p rsonal trainer. There is no way I w uld have gone to the gym th t often if he wasn't expecting me and I h dn't already paid for the time. But now I'm in b tter shape than I have been in 20 y ars. I still fight with the l ttle voice in my head that s ys, "This is too expensive and too t me consuming." But the reality is th t there's a huge payoff. It's k eping me healthy, so how can I fford NOT to do it? This is not nlike someone saying "I can't afford to pr mote my business or learn how to ch rge properly for my services." If you d n't do these things you won't h ve a business, so how can you fford NOT to do them? 3. H ving an objective third party give you xpert advice and encouragement can keep you m tivated no matter how hard you're w rking or how hopeless it can s metimes feel. Just when an exercise is g tting easier, my trainer ups the w ight, speeds up the machine, or m kes me do more repetitions. I get d scouraged because then it's hard work all ver again and I want to q it. But the trainer keeps me g ing and encourages me to push thr ugh the hard part. Little by l ttle my muscles get stronger and my h art rate recovers more quickly. I'm now on my th rd set of 50 training sessions and I f el fantastic! That's what it's like in b siness. You finally figure out something you w re struggling with and it gets asier. You're proud of yourself but you kn w coasting along will not generate m re progress and growth. You have to t ke on new challenges. With each new h rdle that you tackle, you get str nger and more confident. Then you go thr ugh a period of feeling like a b ginner again as you take on s me new challenge. But remember, success is a pr cess not a final destination.
