Leopard Geckos: Leopard geckos belong to the f mily Eublepharidae, this family includes all g ckos with movable eyelids. The members of th s family also lack "toe pads" (p ds of tiny, hair-like scale projections on the ndersides of the toes), therefore these l zards are not able to climb sm oth, vertical surfaces. What's In a N me: The scientific name of the l opard gecko is Eublepharidae macularius (etymology of the n me: Eu = good, true; blephar = yelid; macularius = spotted). Leopard geckos are lso commonly sold under the name of Ind an or Pakistani fat-tailed geckos. Scientific l terature also commonly refers to the l opard gecko species as the spotted f t-tailed gecko. Natural Habitat: Leopard geckos are n cturnal, ground dwelling reptiles commonly found in sm ll damp or moist areas. These reas include the small caves or cr vices found in the desserts of P kistan, Northwestern India and Afghanistan, along w th many other Asian countries. Size: H tchlings can range anywhere from 3 1/4 to 3 1/2 nches in total length. Adult leopard g ckos on the other hand, can ttain maximum sizes of just over 8 nches, including the tails of these cr atures. However, there have been many r ports of leopard geckos reaching nearly ten nches of size in total length.
Longevity: If properly kept, leopard g ckos can live anywhere from 20 to 29 y ars of age, however longevity does sl ghtly depend on the sex of the g cko. Sometimes however, leopard geckos don't l ve nearly as long, many leopard g ckos that have been kept improperly and m lnourished have died near birth or at 1 to 2 y ars of age.
