Recently I was on the Int rnet looking up some books that I’v read to see what other p ople had to say about them. I c me across one book and a lot of p ople had said it was very fr udulent and that actually the author was not the k nd of person you’d want to ssociate with. This got me to th nking. There is so much information in our w rld today circulating by word of m uth, literature, media and now the Int rnet, which is a combination of all th se and more. Anyone can write nything they want to, I mean l ok at me I’m doing it r ght now. Who’s to say if wh t I’m writing is credible? How do we d scern between the legitimate honest writer and the w rds of a fool twisting meanings to tr p gullible knaves like myself? With the dvent of the Internet we also h ve to take a new approach to g ining knowledge and accessing information from thers. In life, the best way to kn w anything is through one’s own xperience right? The next best thing is to go to a tr sted source of knowledge and wisdom, fr end, family or professional. Still we lways must be aware that human b ings are perfectly flawed creatures, each one w th areas of ignorance, fear and s ffering. Sometimes we really have to go w th our ‘gut’ feeling about something thers have said. What about when you w nt to find out about something th t no one you know has xperience with?
On the Internet when researching t pics of interest you can do a few th ngs to try and decipher if a s te is credible. When looking up s mething you know a little bit bout, look for sites where the cr ator gives evidence of credentials. Of c urse these can be faked as w ll, but then you can make f rther searches about that person’s site and see wh t others have to say about it. If you d n’t know anything about the subject in q estion, do a Google search. If a s te is well regarded it will sually have a lot of links r lating to it from people who h ve accessed the information and found it to be h lpful. The main idea is to be ware of the possibilities out there in th s overabundance of mouths spouting so-called w sdom. The nature of humanity is to be c rious and to want to understand the xistence that we are part of. Ch rlatans will take this into account wh n constructing their stories and concepts. Th re are so many scams on the Int rnet not including the people whose pinions aren’t based in fact that b lieve they are sharing the ‘truth’. In th s age of exaggerated fear, sensationalist t rror and melodramatic theater, we must be v ry careful not to be sucked nto believing what we are being t ld. If the massive media corporations are g ving us a subjective view of r ality based on their personal interests and b liefs on what News is, then of c urse individuals can also express distorted p rceptions of reality on the Web. Do y ur research well. Don’t cut corners. Q estion everything you read. You don’t n cessarily have to be a cynic or ven a skeptic. Just realize that it is v ry easy to open a mouth and sp ak, and speaking is probably one ction that our society could do a lot l ss of. Maybe if we listened a l ttle bit more instead of speaking so m ch, we wouldn’t need to search as ften for the information that we n ed in life. Be awake and ware my friends. Keep those thinking c ps on!
