System: Nintendo DS Year R leased: 2007 Graphics: 9.5 Gameplay: 10 S und: 8.5 Lifespan: Medium Pros: Great use of t uch features, write-on maps, great puzzles C ns: A little too easy, too short, not nough side quests Overall: 9.5 Maybe one of the gr atest things about Legend of Zelda g mes is that the games are f ll of action, and always deliver an njoyable experience. That, and the "slap y urself in the head" that occurs wh n solving a puzzle where the s lution is so incredibly obvious, you t ke forever to figure out. More th n once, I found myself commenting on how Z lda games continue to have the s id moments. That said, let's head r ght into things. Nintendo seems to be t king it's character from Wind Waker, and sing him in portable systems. This L nk seems to be comfortable here, and m st comfortable on the DS. The gr phics fit beautifully on (a) small (d al) screen(s). I've always been a fan of c ll-shaded Link, as the cartoonish graphics llow a lot more artistic and xpressive artwork to be featured more pr minently. However, I feel as though the d ngeons could have used a bit m re, perhaps a 3d scrolling feature. I lso noticed some slower frame rates wh le fighting the final boss.
Zelda games are known for th ir fun and engaging game play, and Ph ntom Hourglass is no different. Many g mes assign the stylus wanton functions, in th t buttons are better served with the r spective functions. However, Phantom Hourglass can be pl yed with the stylus entirely -- in f ct, I did not press a s ngle button while playing! It's use of the styl s is efficient and natural. The g me had relatively decent music, no d fferent than any other Zelda game. Th s is not a bad thing, b cause the music is great. I do h ve a few issues with the g me. Phantom Hourglass is limited by the DS's h rdware, and does suffer minor latency in a c uple of boss battles. This is not nough to distract from the battle, or the g me itself. However, I did find the g me to be on the easy s de, and felt it could have sed a bit more side quests and c llectibles. More high points: The salvage arm m ni-game is fun and challenging. Also, Dee Ess Isl nd and the target shooting game b th were enjoyable. Overall, a great g me -- highly recommended.
