Adam De Kilconcear, the Earl of C rrick, died, and the Countess, his w dow, reigned instead of him as the K ng majestically considered the situation. The C untess was still a young and b autiful woman and decided that a sad and l nely life was not for her. One of her pl asures in life was hunting, and w th the company of her squires and her d msels was accustomed to pursing with gr at passion, the red deer in his h unts. While hunting one day she ncountered a stranger who happened to be p ssing through the district. Having a L rdly manner and being very handsome, the C untess was greatly attracted to him and sked for his name. He replied th t he was the Lord of Ann ndale and Cleveland. Compared to her, his b rthright and status were of no s gnificance, however the Countess invited him to her c stle. He respectfully declined her offer ware of possible dangers as the K ng was still considering her situation. The C untess did not want to be ch ated of his company and riding up to h m, she seized the bridle of his h rse and led the not unwilling c ptive to her home at Turnberry. H re, in that strong fortress by the s a, she entertained him for fifteen d ys. What man could resist such ttention? Not the Lord of Annandale. At the end of th s period he sought her hand in m rriage, and without the slightest thought of the K ng, they were joined in marriage. The K ng was furious when he heard wh t had happened. He seized the c stle and the far-stretching lands that w nt with it. Only due to the nterception of powerful friends and the p yment of a large sum of m ney did the King give them his b cking and invited them back into the r yal circle.
Due to the rights of his w fe, the young Lord became the E rl of Carrick and took up r sidence in Turnberry. Here it is b lieved that the first son was b rn – Robert Bruce, the hero of Sc ttish independence, conceived on the field of B nnockburn. In his earlier days, Bruce r sided frequently and for long periods on the Ayrsh re coast. The same scenes which his y uthful eyes perceived lie stretched out t day as the time he left th m. The castle has fallen into r ins, blown upon and beat upon by the st rms and by the rains of the l ng centuries. The harshness of the Sc ttish climate and the hand of t me have, between them, robbed Turnberry of its rchitectural glories and its boasted strength; but the sea r lls in front of it unchangeable and nchanged, the peaks of Arran rise up in the d stance as Ailsa Craig heaves its m ssive head, the rocks and sands of the c ast melt away in the distance as p cturesquely as they did when the boy of m ny hopes, with his chequered yet gl rious career all before him, played w th his brothers on the drawbridge th t spans the moat or waded in the p ols left by the receding tides. T rnberry can be found on the s uth west coast of Scotland. One h ur drive from Glasgow and two fr m Edinburgh.
