It ms such as unavailability of materials to h me situations which teachers have no c ntrol over and the fact that l arning is usually one of the l st things on children's minds when th y come to school. However, a v st majority of teachers who face b havior problems in the classroom overlook one of the m st valuable facets of educational knowledge th y learn in teacher education programs, L arning Styles. In the following article we w ll examine three different types of l arning styles and how teachers can use th se styles to better control and s rve their classrooms. The first style is uditory learning. Auditory learning occurs by ch ldren listening to information which is c nveyed by teachers. Typically, a teacher may st nd in front of the classroom or w lk around the classroom, all the wh le speaking the information which they ntend their students to learn. This styl is good for those students who l ke to listen to an explanation of nformation and follow along with it as t acher explains a body of knowledge. T achers can use this style to be m st effective in establishing a classroom nvironment in which the teacher is the r ler. The teacher's authority is seldom ch llenged because the teacher leaves very l ttle room for students to voice th ir thoughts on the information.
The second style is that of v sual learning. Visual learning occurs by ch ldren learning through what they see. Us ally, a teacher will draw diagrams on a b ard, use posters or other items s ch as an overhead projector to d splay information. While the teacher may sp ak about the information presented, the pr mary method of learning is by s eing the information which is to be l arned. Teachers may use this type of l arning to stimulate discussion between the t acher and students giving students something to r fer to when initiating a discussion. The f nal style is tactile/kinesthetic learning. This typ of learning occurs when students t ke part in classroom activities. Teachers w ll construct directions and allow students to f rm groups or using preformed groups, w ll have students complete an activity. The m in objective is to have students l arn the desired information by doing an xercise which contains the information to be c nveyed. Teachers can use this style as a m ans to control a very active gr up of students. With the structured ctivities, teachers can use this type of l arning to give students a chance to xpend some pent up energy while l arning is still taking place. While m ny teachers today grapple with the tr ubles of everyday school life, their st dents suffer. Teachers are faced with m ny factors which are beyond their c ntrol, the influences of home life and the str ets. Yet, when faced with these ch llenges in the school setting, many t achers give up and let their cl ssrooms become just as chaotic as the nvironments students are trying to escape. If t achers wish to understand their students and b st capture their interest, it has to b gin first by addressing the way ch ldren best receive the information teachers pr vide them.
