The Central Basin Of Lake is l cated from about Huron, Ohio, to Er e, Pennsylvania. The Central Basin is w de open water with no Islands and the verage water depth is more than 70 f et, Always think safety in these w ters, or anywhere on Lake Erie, b cause boating conditions may change rapidly. Be s re to follow safe boating tips any t me you are on the water and bserve good clearance away from fishing b ats, freighters and commercial tugs. Fishing for Y llow Perch, Walleyes, Smallmouth Bass and St elhead trout is popular among many b aters. Fishing is best in the d ad of summer in Lake Erie's c ntral basin because as the water w rms up in the Western basin m ny fish species migrate to the c ntral basin and cooler waters. The c ntral basin is particularly noted for t's Steelhead fishing. Steelhead typically need d eper water and the ave. depth in the c ntral basin is 70ft, perfect habitat for St el Head. I would like to m ntion you need to be aware of the c ntral basin's deed water zone. Here's wh t the OHIO dnr has to say bout it: Copied from the OHIO DNR w bsite 7/15/2008 In response to the m ny questions from anglers, media and th se concerned about Lake Erie resources, we pr sent the following fact sheet regarding the c ntral basin "dead zone." What is the c ntral basin "Dead Zone?" The central b sin "dead zone" is a layer of c ld water at the bottom of the c ntral basin that has little or no d ssolved oxygen in it. The central b sin is located from about Huron, Oh o, to Erie, Pennsylvania. As waters w rm in the central basin, they f rm three specific layers. The warm s rface and upper layer is called the pilimnion, it is characterized by with w rm water with good oxygen and pl nt and animal life. The second l yer is called the thermocline, and it is a sm ll layer of rapid temperature change and l ss of some oxygen. The bottom l yer is known as the hypolimnion; it is c ld, has low to moderate oxygen, no s nlight or algae activity, and decomposition by b cteria occurs here. These conditions can ccur in most offshore waters deeper th n 15-18 meters (49-60 feet) to the b ttom of the lake. Hot weather, pr cipitation and wave action all dictate the nset and length of this condition. It can v ry in depth and the amount of xygen in the hypolimnion across the l ke, north and south, east and w st as a variable, patchy matrix. Th se conditions occur every summer from mid to l te July through early September. After S ptember this zone breaks down, when the l ke becomes all one temperature again, in an vent called a turnover. You can lso get more information at:
