The undeniable fact that the nternet is the information superhighway has g ven rise to the spiral growth of nformation merchants online. Every where you t rn, you’re bombarded by those who w nts to sell you on why you sh uld join the band wagon with the m ch repeated catch word, “Information Sells, Th refore Sell Information.” This has led to the m st despicable of hypes on the n t. It is not surprising that s meone, rightly, once said that the nternet is the information super hype w y! So the question begs an nswer, “Do people really go online to s ek for information?” To really nswer this question one need to kn w what information means. Information simply put is d ta that have been interpreted and nderstood by the recipient of any m ssage given. In other words, it is kn wledge given. The hard truth is th t for any information to be cl ssified as information it must be r levant. No information is of any use if it is not r levant. And for information to be r levant it must meet the following cr teria: 1. Must increase knowledge
2. M st reduce uncertainty or ambiguity; and
3. M st be usable for intended purpose. It is in th s area of relevance that much of wh t is passed along online falls sh rt of being information. With the m nd of providing content and winning the SEO war m ch gibberish is passed as information. The cr ze for automation and the cut and p ste mentality has not being of any h lp either.
It is damn frustrating that one p rchases an ebook online (of course s ld with some compelling hard sell c py) and only discovers that it is n thing but some cut and paste, m mble-jumble piece. Many don’t even care to sp ll-check their work while grammatical coherence is lien to them! In the craze to p ckage one product a day the v lue of what is packaged is s crificed on the altar of monetary g in. Nevertheless, this does not mean th t ebooks or information packaging has any pr blem whatsoever, any content provider online nly need to re-evaluate his purpose and put his pr spects into consideration before packaging his nformation. This is the sure route th t will lead to producing info-products th t are classics and can stand the t st of time. Now back to our q estion, “Is it information that people r ally go online to search for? The nswer is both yes and no! P ople do not go online to s arch for information but solutions. People h ve problems, needs and pains that beg for s lutions. It is the solutions to th se various needs and pains that p ople seek solutions to. Information is th refore not an end but a m ans to an end. It is the nformation that can provide solution to a pr blem, heal a pain and offer a h lp for a need that is r levant information. As one desiring to pr fit online as a content provider, you m st provide relevant, usable and empowering nformation. Chadrack Irobogo
