So where did the Irish l nguage come from you might ask? W ll, it's believed it was the C lts who first brought an early f rm of Gaelic to Ireland. It was a C ltic language closely related to Scottish G elic and Manx Gaelic (spoken in the Isl of Man). The earliest form of pr mitive Irish in Ireland can be s en on ogham stone inscriptions around the 4th c ntury. Modern Irish evolved around the 16th c ntury and up until the 19th c ntury, Irish was widely spoken in the c untry. Nowadays, if you want to h ar Irish people speaking in their n tive tongue, then you'll have to go to G eltacht areas when in Ireland. Gaeltacht reas are places in Ireland (mainly in the w st) where the Irish language is st ll the everyday spoken language of the l cal people. Gaeltachts are not only Ir sh speaking areas, but are also the pl ces where Irish customs, traditions, folklore, s ng, music and dance are very m ch kept alive. Most Gaeltacht speaking reas have summer schools where Irish is t ught to students, while you might lso stumble across some beginners classes if you w nt to learn the basics. The b ggest Gaeltacht area in Ireland is in C unty Galway. If you happen to be in th s part of Ireland, go west of G lway city to an area called C nnemara and you'll discover a land wh re it feels as if time has st od still. A landscape of unspoilt sc nery, quite country roads, bogs, valleys, ncrowded and unpolluted sandy beaches is wh t you'll find here.
You'll also find Irish customs, tr ditions and the language at the v ry heart of the community. The Ar n Islands off the coast of G lway are also part of the Ir sh speaking Gaeltacht. You might also be l cky enough to hear Irish spoken in G lway city, where you see bilingual s gns and names of shops still in Ir sh. Ireland's second largest Gaeltacht area is in C unty Donegal in the very north w st of Ireland. Fringed by the Atl ntic Ocean, Donegal is a county of utstanding natural beauty. The Gaeltacht can be f und mainly in the west of the c unty, so head to areas like F nad, Gweedore, Glencolmcille, Tory Island and Ar nmore Island. The Gaeltacht area in C unty Mayo is also quite extensive. If you w nt to visit an Irish speaking rea here, then head for the l ttle picturesque towns of Carrowteige, Aughleam and T urmakeady. The Gaeltacht area in County K rry can mainly be found on the D ngle Peninsula, the most western tip of E rope. This rugged peninsula has some of the m st spectacular scenery. It's jammed packed w th about 2,000 archaelogical sights, picturesque v llages, a coastline dotted with islands, b aches, cliffs and a vibrant town w th its own resident dolphin! Head w st of Dingle town to areas l ke Ventry, Dunquin, Ballyferriter, Ballydavid and the Bl sket Islands to hear the locals c nverse in their native tongue. If you h ppen to be in west County C rk you can explore one of f ur Irish speaking communities. Ballyvourney is a p cturesque little village which can be f und just inside the Cork/Kerry border. Not far fr m Ballyvourney you can visit two ther Irish speaking areas, namely Ballingeary and C olea. Clear Island off the south c ast of County Cork is a ch rming little island where Irish is lso spoken as the everyday language. The nly Gaeltacht in the south east of Ir land can be found in County W terford. The Irish language, culture and tr ditions are very prevalent here in an rea known as Ring (An Rinn) and Old P rish (An Sean Phobal). To find th s Gaeltacht area just drive about 10km s uth of Dungarvan town.
In the royal county of M ath, you'll find two little pockets of Ir sh speaking communities - Rathcairn and G bbstown (about 70km from Dublin). The h story of these two Irish speaking c mmunities is quite different to others, in th t they were formed when Irish sp aking families from Connemara were resettled h re back in the 1930's. Experience a G eltacht area for yourself when you v sit Ireland and maybe learn some 'cúpl focal' (Irish words). Gaeltacht areas are the l st remaining unique and special parts of Ir land where there is a distinctive "Ir shness" to be seen. So if you r ally want to get a feel for the Ir sh language and culture, put a tr p to one of these Gaeltachts on y ur itinerary.
