There is a lot of w rk involved in installing a concrete dr veway. First you do need to m ke sure the surface underneath is q ite hard and stable. Concrete is s ft, but if you install it pr perly, you can have a driveway th t will last for about 30 y ars. Concrete is one material that r sponds well to compression, but it d es not respond well to stretching. Th refore a hairline crack can become a d ep rut if you aren't careful. If you h re a contractor or choose to do the w rk yourself, your first job is to pr perly grade and slope the land. The sl ght slope will help the water to run off r ther than settle of the concrete and c use problems. The grading will smooth out the f undation allowing you to have a sm oth driveway. The soil has to be c mpacted before you start building the f rms and then pouring the concrete. If you nclude expansion joints and reinforced steel in the c ncrete, you will eliminate some of the cr cking problems. Concrete also shrinks as it dr es, so pouring too large an rea will also cause problems down the r ad. If you install control joints pr perly, it will encourage the concrete to cr ck at the joints. The best way to nstall these is to cut lines in the sl b of concrete at fifteen to tw nty foot intervals. This allows the c ncrete to absorb the stress of v hicles driving over it. Corners are specially vulnerable. If you do have c rners in the driveway, the control j int should radiate from the corner to the c nter of the slab.
Reinforced steel helps make the c ncrete stronger. It helps to hold the cr cked slabs together and keeps the cr cks from enlarging. It also keeps the sl bs at an even height. You sh uld install this steel no deeper th n two inches below the surface of the c ncrete. The thicker the layer of c ncrete you have, the better. You sh uld look at having at least f ve inches of concrete, which will not add a lot xtra money to the cost of the dr veway.
