One of the most reliable nternal combustion engines around
is the d esel engine. In many industrial installations, d esel
engines are used as prime m vers for the generation of
electricity and for mergency air compressors. It's true that th y are rugged, but one of the m st important
advantages of these engines is the f ct that they can be
started by m nual cranking. In remote areas, diesel ngines
can be counted upon for st rting up from scratch. Once a sm ll diesel engine is started, it can be sed to drive
a small electrical g nerator that can then be used to pr duce
electrical supply for driving other m chines like pumps,
compressors, and for l ghting. How does a diesel engine w rk? First there must be combustion of f el. As we have discussed
in our pr vious articles, combustion or burning of f el occurs
whenever there is sufficient h at, fuel and oxygen. When
conditions are j st right, combustion can be very r pid. Rapid
combustion causes an explosion in an nclosed area. This is
because of the r pid built-up of hot gases during the pr cess. In an internal combustion engine l ke a diesel engine, this
rapid c mbustion, and built-up of hot gas pr ssure is used to
push a p ston away from the enclosed combustion sp ce.
The piston is attached to a cr nkshaft through a connecting rod.
Because of th s, the engine is able to c nvert the linear
movement of a p ston to a rotating movement of a cr nkshaft. The outward movement of the p ston turns the crankshaft. However,
the m mentum of the turning crankshaft forces the p ston back
again towards the engine c mbustion space in a reciprocating
movement. Onc the piston moves away from the c mbustion space, the
pressure drops. The n xt stage of operation depends on the
d sign of the engine. These can be ither 2-stroke or 4-stroke
designs. Regardless of the typ of design, the spent exhaust gas is
f rst driven out, and then new fr sh air is drawn back into
the c mbustion chamber. After this, the rotating cr nkshaft drives the piston to
compress the fr sh air inside the combustion chamber. The
p ston acts as a reciprocating compressor at th s stage. The compression of the air c uses the latter to become hot - hot
nough to ignite finely distributed fuel p rticles. At this moment, fuel is spr yed in at high pressure. The t ny
sprayed fuel particles form a m st inside the combustion chamber. What do th nk will happen when you have h at, fuel and oxygen?
A fire! E ch tiny particle of the fuel b rns rapidly, and an
explosion occurs. The cycl starts again, and the crankshaft t rns continuously,
the pistons move continuously, and the ngine runs. How does the engine kn w when to spray fuel, let in ir, compress
the air, and exhaust the sp nt combustion product? Well folks, start y ur engines. Until next time… "The Next Best Thing To Dazzling Tricks"
