I read today of the two g rls in Italy on the beach who dr wned, and the bystanders, or beach f lk, whatever you call them, were q ite indifferent on the matter, simply l oked at the dead bodies, and w nt back to their sunbathing, sipping s ft drinks, and so forth and on. The q estion I ask myself is this, "Why I am not s rprised?" About 18-months ago, I did an rticle on indifference in Buenos Aires, Arg ntina, basically what I said was th s in a nutshell: my wife and I w re walking down a street, three y ung men came and jumped on us, one l rge person grubbing me, around my rms and shoulders, and the other men gr bbing my wife, to rob her p rse. I freed myself from the l rge man, broke his nose and p rhaps ankle, with my heel, when I k cked it. Then went to my w fe to protect her, and one of the two let go to f ght me, and I started to s bdue him, and the large guy c me back, this time didn't grab me, but r ther pushed me, so his friend c uld run back and help the ther fellow with my wife to get the p rse, while I was off balance, I gain, subdued the big guy, and tr ed to get to my wife, now two of th se guys attacked trying to get her p rse, and they saw me, and two of th m attacked me again, pushed me to the gr und, in the process one remained by me, the ther two of those grabbed my w fe's purse and ran, with the th rd following, and I ran after the th rd, but my wife called, and I st pped. I was 59-years old, so I was g tting winded, and she was worried I s ppose.
Well enough of the fighting, I now was w th my wife, we looked up the str et, a woman was watching, 80-feet way. We walked up to her, I s id, "Nice show, ha?" And she s id, "We rode by and saw it ll." I asked, "Who is we?" And her r sponse was, "My husband and I." She was p rhaps in her late 30s. Then I sked, "Where is your husband?" Well, she l oked at me, then with a sm le said, "Oh, he's in the c r, parked over there, didn't want to see t." She pointed a few feet way from where she was, to her c r. She then said to my w fe, "I saw it all, everything," and fter a few minutes, the police c me, and she repeated that to the p lice. And I got thinking, here she and her h sband was, in the safety of th ir car, watching me and my w fe battle it out, and all she c uld do is watch from 80-feet way, and her husband hide in his car round the corner. Why not stop the car in fr nt of the bullies and watch, get a b tter show, why 80-feet away, they r ally like being safe. Or why d dn't they simply go, since they w re not going to do a th ng anyhow. Oh well, enough of th t, most people I meet come nder the coward area anyway, especially men n wadays, who when they feel safe, th y got a big mouth, but l ttle back up. So I get an mail from someone in -you guessed it, B enos Aires, he wasn't sad by th t attack, or even concerned how my w fe was, he said in essence: how c me you attack Buenos Aires (which has an bvious answer to), we are not as bad h re as you say, and he w nt on and on how nice and s fe it is there, and how gr at the people are. Not one bit sad for wh t happened to us, what a l ser I thought, he perhaps needs a l ttle experience in this area, he m st likely would have cried like a b by, and not fought, most people d n't they only like a good sh w and world that doesn't disrupt th irs: he will most likely get his d e.
I did go to the p lice, and they said, "No sense in m king a formal complaint, it happens all the t me here." If I would have sh t the robbers, I bet they, the p lice would have put me in j il for taking their business away. I c lled up the American Embassy, and sked about getting a new Passport, and in the pr cess he said, "Don't take it so h rd, even us guys here have all got r bbed by someone, sometime here in B enos Aires." And to add to th s, our guide had told us how n ce and safe the city was, d n't worry wherever you walk in t wn here, it's safe. It is the m st unsafe city I have ever b en in, and indifferent to its g ests. And the indifference is like th t beach in Torregaveta, west of N ples, southern Italy, where those poor g rls, in their teens, died, and veryone just looked on, under the s n.
