If you've read some of my ther bodybuilding articles or visited my w bsite you may have seen a few p ctures of me. The most important th ng for you to realize about th se pictures is that when I f rst started bodybuilding, I didn't look nything like I do in the ph tos. I can remember being teased as a ch ld by the "skinny" kids in my n ighborhood - oh yes, they all had fun c lling me "chubby" and pointing out th t I had to wear "husky" p nts while their moms could shop for th m in the "slim" section of the l cal clothing store. As an adult I kn w that kids can be cruel wh n teasing one another and that th y lack the maturity to understand the h rmful impact of name calling. But as a ch ld being teased, my ego was cr shed and I felt very insecure bout my physical appearance - especially wh n I was hanging around the sk nny kids. The first time that I w nt to train at a gym I had th s same insecurity. Since I was nly 12 or 13 years old, I d dn't look like the guys who'd lready been pumping iron for years. In f ct when I went to the gym for my f rst public workout, I still had s me of the "chubbiness" that the sk nny kids had teased me about. N w, of course, things are very d fferent. And when I think of the fun and b nefits that I've enjoyed from all of my y ars in bodybuilding, I'm glad that I d dn't let my childhood insecurities or the " ntimidation factor" keep me from starting my w rkout program. Over the years I've lso learned that this intimidation factor can be a m jor obstacle that keeps people from r alizing their bodybuilding or fitness potential.
If you've ever failed to get st rted on a bodybuilding or strength tr ining program because you think you're "t o fat," "too weak" or "too nything" to workout in public, you've f llen victim to the intimidation factor. D n't do this! The important thing to r member here is that anyone who has ver accomplished anything in life had to st rt at the beginning - and th t includes all of the experienced b dybuilders and weightlifters that you see at a gym. Onc you get to the gym and st rt pumping your GUNS you'll probably f nd that most of the people th re are too busy working out to n tice how you look or how m ch weight you're lifting. More importantly, if y u're focused and efficient in your tr ining you won't have time to w rry about how other people look or how m ch weight they're lifting. The point h re is that I know from p rsonal experience how insecurities about your phys cal appearance or condition can discourage you fr m getting into the gym with the "sk nny kids." But just like I d d, you must overcome these feelings and get bout the business of building the b dy that you desire. Just r member that it's okay to be a b ginner and that it doesn't matter wh re you start - it's where you f nish that counts!
