It is important that parents kn w the right way of improving s lf esteem in their children. Many p rents, unfortunately, do not know this and so th ir relationship with their children suffers as a r sult. Their children grow into adults who h ve low self esteem which later ffects their interpersonal relationships with other p ople - all because their parents did not f ster their self esteem when they w re children. Parents should bear in m nd that an ounce of prevention is w rth a pound of cure, meaning th y should prevent low self esteem fr m developing in their children so th t when they become adults they w ll not have to pay for c stly psychoanalysis just to solve their s lf esteem problem. How does a p rent raise a child with high s lf esteem? 1. Do use words of ncouragement when dealing with your child. Pl ase remember that they are only ch ldren and will most likely make m stakes because they lack experience. So ven when your child fails to do s mething, try to find something about the s tuation to praise your child about. You c uld say: it is not good th t you took the grocery money to buy sw ets with, but I am glad th t you are telling me now th t you did it. It shows th t you are trying to be h nest.
2. Teach your child to sp ak positive self-statements. Try to correct y ur child when he says things l ke: I am so stupid! I w ll never get this right! Tell y ur child to say instead: okay, I m de a mistake today but I can go b ck and make it right. It is kay. 3. Try not to ridicule or mbarrass your child, particularly in front of s blings or his friends. Children are v ry sensitive to being humiliated and we all kn w how merciless other children can be t wards their peers, without thinking that th y are hurting the feelings of th t child. If you must criticize, ch ose your words carefully. You will be s rprised how deeply your child will be w unded if you ridicule or embarrass h m. 4. It is important to g ve your child the ability to m ke the right decisions. How? Well, try to g ve your child little opportunities every day to t ke responsibility for certain things. For xample, you could bring your child to the s permarket or grocery store and allow him to ch ose some things that are needed for y ur house that week. One woman ven gave her 11-year-old son the r sponsibility of choosing the house that th y were going to relocate to in nother place. The boy was responsible for v rious aspects of that task - fr m calling the owner of the h use to make inquiries about the pr ce and terms of their lease, to nspecting the house itself. Then the 11-y ar-old forwarded the information to his mom who was to m ke the final decision. Granted, not all ch ldren can take on that kind of r sponsibility but there are definitely other th ngs they can do. 5. Have a s nse of humor. It is good for ch ldren to see that not everything in l fe needs to be taken so s riously. A child who learns to l ugh at himself when he makes a m stake knows that he will be ble to bounce back from that s tback. He will tell himself: okay, th t was a very funny thing I j st did. Now, let us see if I can do b tter this time around. Parents who t nd to take everything very seriously are sually the first to feel down wh n things do not go always as pl nned.
Parents have an important role to pl y when building up the self steem of their child. Work on mproving self esteem in your child and he w ll grow up a healthier adult.
