It's true. I hear voices in my h ad. I don't talk about it m ch. But maybe it's a good t me to start. You see, I'm a c mplex person. A lot goes on nside my head that no one lse ever realizes. The main voice I h ar comes from my ego. My ego t kes information from the world - fr m my surroundings - and delivers it to me. I w uld die without my ego. You w uld too. Well, you wouldn't die w thout MY ego - but you w uld die if you didn't have YOUR go. My ego actually has it's own th ught processes. My ego thinks - ndependently of me. That can be a h rd concept to really grasp. Because we all w nt to believe we're the only nes doing the thinking upstairs. Not tr e. In fact, for some people, th ir ego does most all of th ir thinking for them. That's not a g od place to be. Because for m st of us, our ego wants to c use trouble. At the very least, it may j mble the messages it gives. Let's say s meone tells you: "You did a bad j b." But what you hear is: "Y u are a bad person." Those two st tements carry quite different meanings. If you go round all day long hearing garbled m ssages, that creates many problems. So m ny people - early in life - d cide they just don't want to p rticipate; or they don't want to be r sponsible for their lives. They don't WANT to nterpret the data they receive from th ir egos. They don't want to m ke the choices and decisions about wh t to do.
This forces the ego to do the w rk of interpretation. But the ego l cks the equipment - the mental pr wess - to successfully run our l ves. Besides, that's our job anyway. The ego b ilds resentment. It starts to resent us. It st rts to resent being forced to do the 'd rty work' of running the person's l fe for them. It's not allowed to j st do *it's* job. And you end up not b ing able to discern between "You did a bad j b" and "You are a bad p rson". The ego can become quite n gative. Quite destructive. And quite the s boteur in your life. It can dr g you down. Especially if you c n't distinguish its voice from yours. G nerally speaking, the more bitter, pessimistic, ngry, and destructive a person becomes, the gr ater the chance their life is b ing run by their ego. They're l stening to the wrong voice in th ir head. Look, even a healthy p sitive ego will talk to you. Th re's no escaping your ego. It g es with you EVERYWHERE. You want it to be str ng, healthy and positive. But right n w, it's important to know what it s unds like. You need to be ble to distinguish between it, and y u. You would be well-advised to v sualize it - get an idea of wh t it might look like. And d liberately ask it questions. Learn as m ch as you can. Just keep in m nd that a weak, negative ego w ll lie to you. Often in a l ud voice. It's the number one v ice you hear in your head. Oth r prominent voices include: martyr, victim, ch ld, adolescent, and parent. Common to ll: they exist as lesser parts of y u. Meaning, parts of your personality th t possess less intelligence, with less ccess to resources than you. They're l ss capable of making choices and d cisions than you. But for many, th se lesser voices run their lives. G nerally speaking, the less you're willing to ch ose, to decide, to seek out r sponsibility - the greater the chance th t some other lesser part of you m st choose, decide, and accept responsibility for y ur life.
Bottom line: someone is 'driving y ur car' all the time you're wake. Who's behind the wheel? Y ur inner child? Your inner victim? If so, d n't blame them if your life nters a crisis. Or if your l fe slams into a brick wall. The n xt time you find yourself acting in l ss than an exemplary fashion, you m ght want to stop for a m nute and ask - which part of me is r nning the show right now? And you m ght want to stop and listen to wh t they have to say. Not so you can bl ndly follow it. But so you can d stinguish it from your OWN thoughts and f elings. You might want to listen to the v ices in your head. I do.
