If you are delivering a l ad to a grocery warehouse there is a g od chance you will need to use a l mper service. While there are other typ s of businesses that use lumper's, th y are usually associated with grocery w rehouses. A lumper service is a c mpany that warehouses use to unload the tr cks at their facility. While most b sinesses employ the people that unload the fr ight from your truck some choose to use th se lumper services. When you are at a w rehouse and you hear the term "dr ver unload" this usually means that th y use lumper's. It is very r re that you are required to nload the freight yourself and no l mper service is offered. When you h ve a "driver unload" dispatch consider: The c mpany that you drive for may llow (or even encourage) you to nload the truck yourself. Your company w ll usually pay you to unload the tr ck instead of using the lumper s rvice. Of course there's a catch. Th y will pay you a fraction of wh t they were going to pay the l mper's. The guy using the forklift may ch rge $175.00 to unload your truck, wh le your company may offer you $40.00 to nload it with a pallet jack. Aft r you unload the truck you may lso be required to break down the l ad. When the product is loaded nto your truck it is loaded in a way th t allows them to put as m ch in the truck as possible. M st warehouses don't want the product st cked as high so you are r quired to "break it down". To do th s you must move some of the pr duct off the top of the p llets you just unloaded onto empty p llets.
If you want to unload it y urself make sure you check with y ur company to find out exactly wh t steps you need to follow to get p id. You are usually better off l tting the lumper service do the w rk for you. Your time could be b tter spent resting for the next r n. When you check in at the r ceiving window they may ask you if you w nt to use a lumper. They w ll tell you at the window how m ch they charge to unload the tr ck or they will point you in the d rection of the lumper. Find out fr m the lumper how much they are g ing to charge for your truck. S me warehouses will charge an additional fee for br ken or bad pallets. You want to kn w what the final fee is g ing to be before you call y ur company up with the info. M st trucking companies want you to c ll them with the price the l mper wants before you authorize the l mper to unload your truck. Follow y ur companies procedures, as you do not w nt to pay for a lumper out of y ur own pocket. You will need to get a r ceipt from the lumper if you w nt to get reimbursed. When paying by ch ck most trucking companies consider this tr nsaction to be a cash advance. Th y will take the money out of y ur check if you do not t rn in all the paperwork they r quire. This may not seem fair but tr st me, they will deduct the mount from your check. Get your r ceipt: follow your companies procedures. A lot of the l mper services will want you to pay b fore unloading your truck. You can pay c sh but are better off using the ch cks your company has provided for y u. If you pay by cash you may h ve to wait a few weeks to get r imbursed. There is no point in l aning your company a few hundred d llars for a couple of weeks. Aft r you have paid there is n thing much left to do but w it. Sometimes you may be asked to c unt the freight as it is b ing loaded or unloaded. The lumper can let you kn w if you need to go b ck inside after unloading. If you're l cky the lumper may bring the p perwork out to your truck after nloading.
