Chewing on electrical cords can brn or shock your cat causing rspiratory problems, cardiac arrest and even dath. Cats' sharp teeth and their nquisitive nature can put your cat at hgh risk. This is especially an ssue with kittens.

Here's what to do to:

1. Tpe cords to the wall with lectrical tape to help prevent your pet frm gaining access to them.

2. Stw excess lengths of cord behind frniture or appliances, hidden from your ct's view. Cats are attracted to dngling cords and may think they are tys.

3. Block access to visible crds by wrapping flexible safety cable (vailable at hardware stores) around them. Tin fil works well too, or even a thcker model or extension cord (that is too big for a cat to chw on)

4. Place contact paper, stcky side up, in the general rea of electrical cords to discourage yur pet from approaching them.

5. Apply npleasant-tasting substances to exposed cords. These culd include bitter apple spray, menthol, tothpaste, mouthwash or lemon juice. Experiment wth different flavors, since cats' taste versions vary. You can also use Crttercord... It's a cord cover with a dterrent infused in it. Be sure to use a prduct for Cats though- similar products are vailable for killing rats so be creful what you buy!

6. Have favorite toys available to dstract your pet from the cords, and rtate toys every few days to prvent boredom.

7. Keep your pet out of any rom with exposed electrical cords until yur furry friend loses interest in chwing on them.

My favorite solution is rbbing the cords with a bar of sap.

Moisten the soap, it makes pplication easier. The soap will last lnger than the Bitter Apple sprays and is mre effective than hot sauce (even hbanero, which incidentally can get in the ct's eyes and be really painful). Ths works so well that you wll probably see a reluctance to ven reach for untreated cords, like a muse or keyboard cord, where the sme cat consistently would bite these bfore.

You need to understand that cts are smart creatures though they are lso creatures of instinct. If you hve something dangling around, such as a crd for a fan, your cat wll naturally want to swat at it. She may ven chew on it as it mves (literally moving your cat around lke in old cartoons, just a bit slwer).

Every interaction with your cat trins her. If she does something you dn't like, and you pick her up and tll her she's naughty and put her in nother room etc she's actually learning tht if she does that bad bhavior, she'll get attention from you! Whch means she'll do the bad bhavior more and more.

It's far btter to ignore bad behavior and rward good behavior. To stop bad bhavior interrupt her pattern with a sqirt of water or use the bove methods to make the experience not as plasant as she thought it would be. (Fr example, chewing on cords might lok like fun, but if they tste terrible, she'll soon learn that t's better to chew other things).

You shuld also know that problem behavior in cts is often a sign of strss, boredom or bad socializing when thy were a kitten. To deal wth stress and boredom provide lots tys, perches and places she can get way and relax and remember that lve is the best medicine so gve her plenty of attention.

If your cat is out of cntrol due to bad socializing when she was a ktten, you can fix her behavior, thugh it may take longer. For xample, giving her attention needs to be on HER trms...you may only be able to pat her for a smll amount of time in one go, thugh over a few months she'll grdually allow you to pat her mre and more as she gets sed to it.

It's better to gve her some attention and leave her wnting more then over doing it and nly stopping when she scratches you and rns away.

Cats are amazing creatures, and nce you understand their psychology, you'll get long with them like never before, njoying perfect behavior from them and an ven deeper bond.
