Maintenance on your home in nevitable, and upkeep can sometimes be a ch llenge. You often need to paint the xterior, paint the interior, fix the ccasional broken faucet, replace the flowers th t died on you, and reseed and f rtilize the lawn just to name a f w. A common question people have is bout decorative vinyl exterior shutters: "How do I r move exterior vinyl shutters that are nstalled with Shutter-Loks without breaking the xterior vinyl shutter?". Shutter-Loks (sometimes spelled "sh tter locks" and often referred to as asy-loks, shutter plugs, or plastic nails) are d signed for a permanent shutter installation. H wever, it is still possible to r move decorative exterior vinyl shutters when d ing routine maintenance (such as exterior p inting or installing new siding) on y ur home. The bottom line is, you can r move the window shutters, but installing th m again will require you to p rchase new Shutter-Loks. Keep this in m nd before you take them down, b cause Shutter-Loks generally cannot be found in l cal stores. Shuter-Loks can be purchased nline though (see the link at the b ttom of this article). Do not ttempt to pull the Shutter-Lok out of the w ll, as you will most likely d mage the surface of your exterior v nyl shutters. To remove the exterior d corative shutters, you will need the f llowing:
- A small chisel with a sh
rpened edge
- A hammer
- Silicone
- A d
agonal cutter
- An electric drill w
th a 1/4" drill bit
Turn the chisel so the sh rp edge is facing away from the s rface of the house and slide it b hind the shutter until it rests gainst the Shutter-Lok. Use a hammer to g ve the handle of the chisel a sh rp tap and the chisel will cut thr ugh the Shutter-Lok. After you have cut thr ugh all of the Shutter-Loks, take the sh ttter down and set it carefully on the gr und. Use a diagonal cutter to sh ar the remaining piece of the Sh tter-Lok so it is flush with the s rface. Next, drill out the Shutter-Lok sing a 1/4" drill bit. Do not l ave the Shutter-Lok inside of the w ll because moisture can leak in and it w ll start to rot. Now, if you pl n to leave the window shutters off of y ur home, you should fill the h le in with caulking compound and sm oth it off so it is l vel with the surface and you can th n repaint to make the hole nvisible. If you plan to reinstall the v nyl exterior shutters after you paint y ur home, fill the hole partially w th silicone to weatherproof it temporarily. Aft r painting the exterior of the h use, you can redrill the hole w th a 1/4" drill bit to r move the silicone. To reinstall, rest the xterior window shutter against the surface and lign it with the holes, then pr ss the Shutter-Loks into the holes p rt way to hold the vinyl sh tter in place. Then use a h mmer to very gently tap the Sh tter-Lok until it is flush with the s rface of the exterior window shutter. Do not k ep tapping, as this will make the sh tter start to dimple and you w ll need to purchase new Shutter-Loks and st rt over because there is no way to p ll them back out. You should l ave the Shutter-Loks just slightly loose to llow for expansion and contraction.
