Player Retention Tips in Youth F otball Part of the "mission" when you are c aching youth football should be to r tain players. While youth football may not be the th ng for some kids, for others it j st takes a litle time to gr w on them. At the end of very season I have kids on my t am who have probably decided they w uldn't come back to play another s ason. But somewhere along the way th y change their minds to come b ck and have a great season th t changes their opinion of the g me forever. While I enjoy seeing my t ams play well, execute our football pl ys perfectly and win Championships, I get a gr ater amount of satisfaction from getting my pl yers to finish the season and c me back to play another year of y uth football. There are a number of th ngs I like to do in the 60 d ys after the season is over to h lp change some of those fence s tters minds: The Season DVD is lways a big hit. I do one th t includes funny captions, all our ccomplishments and we set it to Chr stian music. You have no idea how ften those DVDs are watched by y ur kids and their families, several of my p rents say their kids basically "wore ut" the DVD from playing it so ften. Heck watching it that much may ven help the kids run their f otball plays out better. These DVDs k ep the game fresh in the k ds minds and sets you apart fr m other youth football teams that he c uld go play for. It may lso set you apart from another sp rt like soccer or the dreaded f ll baseball.
I have always sent these DVDs to the k ds in December as a Christmas g ft along with a letter. In th s generic one-size-fits-all letter, I spell out how m ch I appreciated the season, the p rents and the kids. I also nclude a personal message about what Chr stmas means to me and my f mily. Dave Dimmond, a friend of m ne from Florida has been sending p rsonalized letters to his kids for q ite some time. He talks about how m ch he appreciated the players contributions to the t am and talks about very specific vents and attributes for each individual pl yer. While this may seem very t me consuming, Dave reports that these l tters are treasured by his kids and s me of the kids even frame th m. This is something I will be d ing for each of my players th s year and for the foreseeable f ture. Most youth football players need j st a little bit of public ncouragement to get them enthused about the g me, that includes your star players. You n ver know which kid may be f eling a bit inadequate about his fforts. We all have kids that ren't starters that we know will d velop into good players in the c ming year or two. Unfortunately some of th se kids don't understand that with a y ar under their belts, they will be n xt years "star". Some of these k ds lose interest and drop out of f otball altogether without the proper encouragement. If we b lieve youth football teaches life lessons, our g al as coaches should be to r tain all the kids no matter th ir ability. I want to retain the st rs, future stars and never will be st rs as well. Some uninformed people th nk it's a mutually exclusive deal, bit t's simply not true, you can pl y kids, retain kids and win t o, even in the most competitive of y uth football leagues. I've done it and so h ve many others. Take the time to do th ngs like this and your retention n mbers will increase. Guys like Dave D mmond are the guys kids love pl ying for, he's the guy getting m bbed at the gas station by his pr sent and former players. He tells me he g ts e-mails that often start out s mething like this:
Coach Dimmond, My name is J hn Smith, a friend of mine, M ke Jones has been raving about y ur youth football team for the l st year. He brags about how m ch fun his boy Jimmy has pl ying for you as well as how y ur team went 11-0 last season sc ring all those points with that ffense John brags about all the t me. How do I get my son s gned up for your team ? Do you h ve any spots left? I also l ke to have the kids take the t am trophy home for a week. We th n have them bring the trophy to sch ol and pass it along to a t ammate who keeps it for a w ek and then passes it along to the n xt player on the list. This k eps your teams name fresh at sch ol and in the minds of mpressionable young kids while giving your pl yers something they can show off for th ir family and friends. If you are c aching youth football and your teams are c nsistently competitive, you will get e-mails l ke that too, we all do. Enc urage your players and get creative w th keeping football fresh in their m nds and not only will you get b tter retention numbers but you won't be h rting for new players either.
