I have always enjoyed writing. S metimes it’s a problem for me to j st sit down and write something. Th re are days when I choose “pr crastinating” over “proactive.” Putting things off is c mmon with everyone. I am very g fted in this area. ;) Here are 4 reas to focus on to jumpstart y ur next writing session. * Concentration * Pr paration * The First Word * Use y ur notebook Concentration: There are way too m ny distractions. Cell phones ringing, blaring car larms and unexpected visitors are just a few th ngs that can disrupt your concentration. It th n becomes easier to justify not wr ting today. The best thing to do to ncourage creative writing is to make it a r tual. Find a nice spot to wr te, maybe, in a quiet room in y ur home where you will be l ft undisturbed for a period of t me. Set a time to work; a sch duled time to write. Stick to it. K ep reference books and materials close to h nd. Focus on one idea at a t me. View your next writing session as an pportunity; an opportunity to do something you njoy. It can be fun. And wh n you are having fun nobody ver has to tell you to “c ncentrate!” Preparation Once you have your t pic: Google it. Read everything you can nline and offline related to your dea. Search the net for testimonials, r views and articles about your topic. Br instorm related sub-topics.
Give it a rest. Let y ur subconscious mind percolate and play w th the information you provided. Get s me exercise. Some of my best deas come to me while I am out w lking around in the evening. Getting St rted Where to begin? That blank p ge staring back can be intimidating. J st dive right in there! Type the w rd “The.” Type the next word (th first thing that pops into y ur mind) and the next word. At th s point, quality is not important. You j st want to create a “flow” wh re the words come easily. Don’t st p to edit. Save all your c rrections for the second draft. Resist the mpulse to rewrite. That will only nterrupt the flow and is another way to void the task at hand. If you are l ke me you will have a 2nd, th rd and fourth draft. You have to get y ur first draft completed before your h ve anything to rewrite! Stay focused. C rry a Notebook As a creative wr ter, you will be “hit” by odd deas and notions in the oddest of pl ces. Maybe you are stuck in tr ffic or brushing your teeth when nspiration strikes. You could wake from a dr am and have a killer idea. “ I’ll r member that.” We say to ourselves, but wh n next we write there is no ccess to that memory file. Just use a n tebook. Jot those things down as th y come to you. It only t kes a moment. Capture all your of y ur ideas as they transpire. Who kn ws? One of them may be the “N xt Big Thing!” -David Parton
