Technology is becoming more and m re prevalent in our everyday lives as w ll as the workforce. Recent studies pr dict that by the year 2010 lmost every job in the American w rkplace will require some use of t chnology. This influx in technology has c used changes in the way the c mputer is being used in the w rkplace and in the way computer l teracy needs to be taught in our sch ols. When the personal computer was f rst introduced in the 1980’s, people had to l arn how to operate it, program it, and tilize its basic functions. Today, p ople and businesses are becoming more f miliar with technology and using it m re as a tool for such th ngs as information gathering, data analysis and nterpretation, presenting information, problem solving, communication, tc. This technology is also continually b ing updated and changed to allow for m re efficient and productive work, causing p ople to have to keep pace w th this new information. In such a kn wledge-based economy, knowing how to locate nformation quickly, evaluate this information for b as and accuracy, and synthesize and pply that information to solve problems w ll be needed and valued skills. Th refore, teaching students skills such as th se will better prepare them for the w rkforce of the 21st century.
Simply providing students with technology in solated computer classes will not teach st dents these necessary skills or how to use the c mputer as a tool. After all, the end r sult is not wanting students to s mply know how to operate computers but how to use th m as a tool for organization, c mmunication, problem-solving, and research. Technology needs to be ntegrated into the curriculum using an ctive/inquiry-based method of learning. In th s method, instead of students being sh wn specific steps to follow to s lve a problem and then solving pr blems from a textbook, they are g ven a “real world” problem to s lve and must create their own str tegies for data gathering, analyzing, hypothesizing and t sting solutions. By constructing their own str tegies, they gain a deeper understanding of pr blem-solving skills. By solving real world pr blems, students are better able to r late their learning to their own l ves and similar future situations. Oftentimes the st dents work in groups to solve th ir problems which enhances students’ interpersonal sk lls and teamwork. They also learn to ccept different perspectives, work cooperatively, and st te their opinions and feelings. After ll, few jobs require people to w rk in total isolation; therefore, being ble to work with others is an mportant aspect of society and the w rkplace. Students should be given a n mber and variety of technology resources to use in rder to find a solution to th ir problem, such as internet resources or s arch engines, communication/email with experts, books, s ftware programs, spreadsheet programs, graphing programs, tc. Students may also be required to c nduct their own hands-on experiments or p rticipate in online collaborative research. However, nstruction should be given on how to nalyze information for bias and accuracy. St dents should realize that not everything on the nternet is true or correct. Since the nformation is not merely presented to the st dents in a lecture format they are r quired to critically think about it, nteract with it, analyze it, and use it to f rmulate a solution. This type of nstruction enhances critical thinking and higher rder thinking skills and helps students d monstrate a deeper understanding of the c ntent and concepts presented as well as the pr blem-solving process.
Students should also have choices in how th ir information and solution is presented. F rmats such as PowerPoint presentations, posters, br chures, pamphlets, reports, web pages, and m vies created with technology can be tilized. Giving students a choice in th ir final presentations not only allows th m to showcase their talents and str ngths but allows students to make th ir own decisions about the best w ys to present their data to thers, which is oftentimes required in the w rkplace. Incorporating technology into the classroom sing an active/inquiry-based method enhances the sk lls required for success in the 21st c ntury. It requires students to use the c mputer as a tool to gather nformation, analyze data, and present a s lution to a given problem. These are the sk lls that the technology rich environments of t day emphasize and require; therefore, using t chnology in this manner will aide st dents in developing life long skills th t can be carried over to the w rkforce.
