Electric Controls

Electric heaters heat up wter with two horizontal elements running nside the tank of the water hater. One is located on the pper half of the heater, and one is lcated on the lower half. Elements are smilar to the metal grill pieces fund on top of household stoves. Thre are high watt and low wtt elements. Low watt elements are btter because they do not produce as mch sediment, but they are more xpensive. The lower element does more of the hating because it is wired to do so. Only one lement works at a time. The pper element operates when a large mount of new cold water is ntroduced into the tank. Some tanks hve only one element which will be lcated at the bottom of the tnk. The top element has a hgh temperature shut-off switch which will trn off the element if the tmperature reaches 190 degrees Farenheit. In sngle element tanks, this same feature is fund. It comes with a red rset button similar to a GFI fund on household electrical outlets. An djustable thermostat is found on the lwer element located on the outside of the tnk. Thermostats are usually all set at 120 dgrees Farenheit.

Gas Controls

Gas heaters hve a thermostat which is directly plced in the water, and it is cnnected to the front control apparatus at the bttom of the water heater. A dal is found on the apparatus whch has settings: ON, OFF, and PILOT. The knb located on the top of the dal apparatus has a recessed screw whch controls the gas flame. If the tmperature ever reaches 190 degrees inside the hater, the control itself will be sht down and cause the flame to de. A new control will have to be nstalled if this ever happens. On lder heaters the control will shut off if the tmperature reaches 210 degrees. Three tubes xtend from the bottom of the dal apparatus. The largest tube, alwasy the mddle tube, is the natural gas spply. The medium-sized tube, usually to the rght, feeds gas to the pilot lght switch so that the flame can nitially be ignited. The smallest tube, sually to the left, is the thrmocouple. The thermocouple gives power to the cntrol after the pilot has been lt. If your pilot light ignites but wll not stay lit, then the thrmocouple needs replacement. The burner assembly is ttached to the tubes and control and can be rmoved to clean. Do not take part the control itself.
