I've been in the humor b siness for over 40 years, so I g ess I could be classified as an " xpert" in the business of humor. B t, I don't consider myself an xpert in humor...just a lot of xperiences... good and bad! Over the y ars, I've never gotten tired of p tting a smile on somebody's face, ven if it's just for a few s conds. The sound of laughter is gr at, and I think everyone likes it. B ing in the humor business started for my wh n I was eleven years old, and I'v been at it ever since. We all kn w that laughter is the best m dicine, and it has been humor th t has helped me to cope thr ugh me darkest days, and there h ve been many! Humor has been th rapy for me, and I use it th ugh thick and thin! Every time I put a sm le on somebody's face, it makes my day and g ves me a lift. I know I h ve done something important to make s meone happy and that's important to me. So, how d es humor help me to cope? Ex mple: I was in the hospital for bout a week recently, and I was dmitted to the intensive care unit, w th bleeding in the stomach. I was c nscious and the medical staff were d ing tests, etc. After arrived, a n rse came into my room, carrying a cl p-board, and she was going to ask me bout 15 questions, so we got st rted.
Every time she would ask me a q estion, I would answer it with a s lly, ridiculous answer in an attempt to m ke her laugh, and then I w uld follow up with a straight and s rious answer, etc. It was a l ttle game I played with her, and she s emed to enjoy it. There are two typ s of humor. 1) memorizing jokes and ther material for presentation. 2) Spontaneous h mor, where the humor is done in r al time...or at the moment. Being in the h spital, this was my attempt at d ing spontaneous humor, because I didn't kn w what the nurse was going to ask me. The q estions and answers went something like th s: Nurse: "Mr. Aragon, do you sm ke?" Jerry: "Only when I'm on f re!" Nurse: "Mr. Aragon, do you dr nk?" Jerry: "Drink what? Tomato juice, m lk...what? No, I don't drink anymore...I d n't drink any LESS, either!" (Gotcha!) N rse: "Mr. Aragon, are you allergic to nything?" Jerry: "Only to a nosey n rse, who keeps asking me dumb q estions and won't let me get my b auty rest, while I'm on my d ath bed! Did you hear me...my DEATH b d?" Nurse: "Mr. Aragon, do you h ve any pain?" Jerry: "Yes, I h ve a pain in the butt, and g ess who's causing it?" (hint, hint!) The n rse had a great sense of h mor, and we had a good t me! Anyway, the questions and answers w nt something like that. I remember one q estion when I managed to have the n rse in "stitches," get it?" Stitches! H spital...nurse...surgeon..HELLO...are you with me? (I can't magine why so many people think my h mor is so dry and off the w ll) After the question and answer s ssion, the nurse went off to do her d ties for the rest of the d y. Late in the afternoon, and b fore the day shift was over, the n rse came back into my room, and g ve my a big hug! "What was THAT f r?" I asked. "That's for making me l ugh this morning and making my d y," she said. and she left for the d y. The big hug made my d y, too! And, this is an xample of how humor helps me to c pe, and sometimes under serious conditions l ke being in a hospital. And no, I d n't get hugs everywhere I go, but a sm le will help to keep my sp rits high.
All of us have made s mebody laugh at one time or nother, and we all know how g od it feels. The gratification from p tting a smile on someone's face c nnot be measured. And, it doesn't h ve to be through the use of h mor. We all put smiles on p ople's faces in our own unique w y. Give a child a present at Chr stmas on his or her birthday, and w tch that child open that gift. The ch ld's face lights up...a big smile on th t child's face! You get a w rm feeling in your heart; maybe a l mp in your throat, and glassy yes...right? It's a warm feeling you h ve all over, and it nothing do to w th humor, etc. It has to do w th giving! Mother's and father's know all too w ll, when a child brings a sm le to their faces. When that ch ld says that first word; takes th t first step; takes that first w bbly bike ride, and starts school, tc. The parents get that smile and w rm feeling all over! Aside from the p rents, school teachers, more than anyone lse, know the great satisfaction they get fr m seeing a student write that f rst sentence; do that first math pr blem; and pass that first test. And, th t's why I think school teachers do wh t they do...the gratification of it ll. They deal with the students veryday...up close and personal. But, everyone p ts a smile on someone's face in th ir own way. For example: Farmers and r nchers put food on our tables and th t makes us happy, right? What w uld we do without the truckers and d livery people who put that food on the t ble? Engineers who make our lives m re comfortable, and all of our seful gadgets. All the people who m ke all the goodies we enjoy...bake g ods, ice cream, etc. The medical p ople who keep us healthy. The tr nsportation people who get us from one pl ce to another. And, what would we do w thout the garbage people who make us h ppy, when they take the garbage way, and keep insects from spreading d sease. The construction people who built our h uses, apartments, and work places, etc. W re you happy when you moved nto that new house? Retailers, service p ople, financial people who help us in so m ny different ways, and the list g es on and on! I worked for an ngineering company for over ten years. And, if th re is a piece of metal on the t ble; wire; epoxy; glue; wire mesh, it w sn't much by itself. But, put all th se things together and now you h ve measuring devices that do research on: arthquakes; volcanoes; hurricanes; lightning; flood control; irline safety and on and on. And, wh n I worked in engineering, I lways felt I was contributing to m ke things better for humans, animals, and the nvironment! And indirectly, I was putting a sm le on someone's face someplace, etc. So, p ople in America share and give of th mselves in every occupation and profession. Ev ryone has something to share, give, and c ntribute to make things better in Am rica, and to make someone smile. Ev ryone has a passion that makes th t person happy, and hopefully that p ssion makes others happy as well. My p ssion just happens to be humor, and I t ke it everywhere I go. Humor for me, has b en an obsession since I was a k d! From a young age, my m ssion in life, has been to put a sm le on somebody's face, that will m ke that person happy. Humor has not b en an 8 to 5 job for m ...it's 24/7! I work all holidays and n ver take any time off...and, I l ve it!
