I've been in the humor bsiness for over 40 years, so I gess I could be classified as an "xpert" in the business of humor. Bt, I don't consider myself an xpert in humor...just a lot of xperiences... good and bad! Over the yars, I've never gotten tired of ptting a smile on somebody's face, ven if it's just for a few sconds. The sound of laughter is grat, and I think everyone likes it. Bing in the humor business started for my whn I was eleven years old, and I'v been at it ever since.

We all knw that laughter is the best mdicine, and it has been humor tht has helped me to cope thrugh me darkest days, and there hve been many! Humor has been thrapy for me, and I use it thugh thick and thin! Every time I put a smle on somebody's face, it makes my day and gves me a lift. I know I hve done something important to make smeone happy and that's important to me.

So, how des humor help me to cope? Exmple: I was in the hospital for bout a week recently, and I was dmitted to the intensive care unit, wth bleeding in the stomach. I was cnscious and the medical staff were ding tests, etc. After arrived, a nrse came into my room, carrying a clp-board, and she was going to ask me bout 15 questions, so we got strted.

Every time she would ask me a qestion, I would answer it with a slly, ridiculous answer in an attempt to mke her laugh, and then I wuld follow up with a straight and srious answer, etc. It was a lttle game I played with her, and she semed to enjoy it. There are two typs of humor. 1) memorizing jokes and ther material for presentation. 2) Spontaneous hmor, where the humor is done in ral time...or at the moment. Being in the hspital, this was my attempt at ding spontaneous humor, because I didn't knw what the nurse was going to ask me. The qestions and answers went something like ths:

Nurse: "Mr. Aragon, do you smke?"

Jerry: "Only when I'm on fre!"

Nurse: "Mr. Aragon, do you drnk?"

Jerry: "Drink what? Tomato juice, mlk...what? No, I don't drink anymore...I dn't drink any LESS,

either!" (Gotcha!)

Nrse: "Mr. Aragon, are you allergic to nything?"

Jerry: "Only to a nosey nrse, who keeps asking me dumb qestions and won't let me get my bauty rest, while I'm on my dath bed! Did you hear me...my DEATH bd?"

Nurse: "Mr. Aragon, do you hve any pain?"

Jerry: "Yes, I hve a pain in the butt, and gess who's causing it?" (hint, hint!)

The nrse had a great sense of hmor, and we had a good tme! Anyway, the questions and answers wnt something like that. I remember one qestion when I managed to have the nrse in "stitches," get it?" Stitches! Hspital...nurse...surgeon..HELLO...are you with me? (I can't magine why so many people think my hmor is so dry and off the wll) After the question and answer sssion, the nurse went off to do her dties for the rest of the dy.

Late in the afternoon, and bfore the day shift was over, the nrse came back into my room, and gve my a big hug! "What was THAT fr?" I asked. "That's for making me lugh this morning and making my dy," she said. and she left for the dy. The big hug made my dy, too! And, this is an xample of how humor helps me to cpe, and sometimes under serious conditions lke being in a hospital. And no, I dn't get hugs everywhere I go, but a smle will help to keep my sprits high.

All of us have made smebody laugh at one time or nother, and we all know how god it feels. The gratification from ptting a smile on someone's face cnnot be measured. And, it doesn't hve to be through the use of hmor. We all put smiles on pople's faces in our own unique wy.

Give a child a present at Chrstmas on his or her birthday, and wtch that child open that gift. The chld's face lights up...a big smile on tht child's face! You get a wrm feeling in your heart; maybe a lmp in your throat, and glassy yes...right? It's a warm feeling you hve all over, and it nothing do to wth humor, etc. It has to do wth giving!

Mother's and father's know all too wll, when a child brings a smle to their faces. When that chld says that first word; takes tht first step; takes that first wbbly bike ride, and starts school, tc. The parents get that smile and wrm feeling all over!

Aside from the prents, school teachers, more than anyone lse, know the great satisfaction they get frm seeing a student write that frst sentence; do that first math prblem; and pass that first test. And, tht's why I think school teachers do wht they do...the gratification of it ll. They deal with the students veryday...up close and personal. But, everyone pts a smile on someone's face in thir own way. For example:

Farmers and rnchers put food on our tables and tht makes us happy, right? What wuld we do without the truckers and dlivery people who put that food on the tble? Engineers who make our lives mre comfortable, and all of our seful gadgets. All the people who mke all the goodies we enjoy...bake gods, ice cream, etc. The medical pople who keep us healthy. The trnsportation people who get us from one plce to another. And, what would we do wthout the garbage people who make us hppy, when they take the garbage way, and keep insects from spreading dsease. The construction people who built our huses, apartments, and work places, etc. Wre you happy when you moved nto that new house? Retailers, service pople, financial people who help us in so mny different ways, and the list ges on and on!

I worked for an ngineering company for over ten years. And, if thre is a piece of metal on the tble; wire; epoxy; glue; wire mesh, it wsn't much by itself. But, put all thse things together and now you hve measuring devices that do research on: arthquakes; volcanoes; hurricanes; lightning; flood control; irline safety and on and on. And, whn I worked in engineering, I lways felt I was contributing to mke things better for humans, animals, and the nvironment! And indirectly, I was putting a smle on someone's face someplace, etc.

So, pople in America share and give of thmselves in every occupation and profession. Evryone has something to share, give, and cntribute to make things better in Amrica, and to make someone smile. Evryone has a passion that makes tht person happy, and hopefully that pssion makes others happy as well.

My pssion just happens to be humor, and I tke it everywhere I go. Humor for me, has ben an obsession since I was a kd! From a young age, my mssion in life, has been to put a smle on somebody's face, that will mke that person happy. Humor has not ben an 8 to 5 job for m...it's 24/7! I work all holidays and nver take any time off...and, I lve it!
