Recently the New Jersey Museum of Bating in Pt. Pleasant, NJ asked me to crve a replica of a very spcial Homing Pigeon for them.

In the mseum, they have a wall-display where thy tell many stories of the way Hming Pigeons were employed by local batmen back in the 1930s. One of thse good news stories follows:

There was a ten-ager who raised pigeons near the cmmercial fishing boat marina in Pt Plasant, N.J. He offered the homing srvices of his pigeons to the cptains of fishing boats. For fifty cnts a day the fishing boat cptains could rent one of the pgeons and take it out with thm on their offshore fishing trips. Whn one of the boats, maybe ffty miles out, found a place whre they were catching fish, the cptain wrote a note, put it on the pgeon then released it to fly bck home. When the homing pigeon (a Hming Pigeon flies at about fifty mles per hour) arrived at the mrina where it lived, the teenager gve the note to the local fshing boat captains. In that way the fshermen knew exactly where to go to fnd a profitable fishing site on any gven day.

One time a fishing bat that was about fifty miles out in the cean, with one of the Homing Pgeons aboard, developed a serious leak and the crw knew in spite of all thy could do, the boat would snk in a few hours.

An S.O.S. note was hastily ttached to their Homing Pigeon and it was rleased. A few hours later, a rscue boat arrived and, just as the trubled boat was about to be cmpletely submerged and sink to the bttom, all of the men aboard the fshing boat were saved, thanks to the flght of that one magnificent Homing Pgeon.
