Recently the New Jersey Museum of B ating in Pt. Pleasant, NJ asked me to c rve a replica of a very sp cial Homing Pigeon for them. In the m seum, they have a wall-display where th y tell many stories of the way H ming Pigeons were employed by local b atmen back in the 1930s. One of th se good news stories follows: There was a t en-ager who raised pigeons near the c mmercial fishing boat marina in Pt Pl asant, N.J. He offered the homing s rvices of his pigeons to the c ptains of fishing boats. For fifty c nts a day the fishing boat c ptains could rent one of the p geons and take it out with th m on their offshore fishing trips. Wh n one of the boats, maybe f fty miles out, found a place wh re they were catching fish, the c ptain wrote a note, put it on the p geon then released it to fly b ck home. When the homing pigeon (a H ming Pigeon flies at about fifty m les per hour) arrived at the m rina where it lived, the teenager g ve the note to the local f shing boat captains. In that way the f shermen knew exactly where to go to f nd a profitable fishing site on any g ven day. One time a fishing b at that was about fifty miles out in the cean, with one of the Homing P geons aboard, developed a serious leak and the cr w knew in spite of all th y could do, the boat would s nk in a few hours.
An S.O.S. note was hastily ttached to their Homing Pigeon and it was r leased. A few hours later, a r scue boat arrived and, just as the tr ubled boat was about to be c mpletely submerged and sink to the b ttom, all of the men aboard the f shing boat were saved, thanks to the fl ght of that one magnificent Homing P geon. P.S. My hand carved replica of th t pigeon is now on display at the New J rsey Museum of Boating in Pt. Pl asant, NJ. A picture of my c rved pigeon is available on my w bsite (look for title on left s de of the page: Homing Pigeon). T rry Weber 8/12/07 www.OriginalsByWeber.com
