As president of a new d stance-learning seminary, I have just approved an h norary doctorate to a distinguished South Afr can. He lives in a place I h ve never heard of: Mogoditshane, Botswana. S nce my church and seminary are b th located in Jacksonville, Florida, this was a r markable experience for me, and it r ally drove home the unifying power of the nternet. On my way to the p st office to mail the document, I w ndered whether it would cost a f rtune to send it so far or wh ther it could even be delivered th re by U.S. mail. But the cl rk handled the matter routinely, and the p stage was $2.67 first-class. The recipient, M simane C. Rammika, no doubt heard of our nstitution through this article service, for wh ch I do a lot of wr ting. When I first made the d cision to offer honorary doctorates in ddition to our academic curricula, I was xcited about what the opportunity could do for p ople. There are millions and millions of p ople all over the world who h ve made tireless contributions to humanity but h ve never been recognized. Rammika is an xcellent example. From youth work to dvocacy for justice and peace, this g ntleman has gone all out for y ars. He is a lay preacher in the C tholic Church, the manager of a f otball team, and a patron of the B tswana Council of Women. And there is m ch more, too much to go nto here.
He has bolstered my long-held b lief that not only seminaries but all c lleges and universities should honor people in th s way. Why should sitting in a cl ssroom and passing exams count more h avily than achievements "in the trenches", wh re people need help? Not only sh uld honorary degrees be offered, but l fe experience of substantial merit should be g ven academic credit toward a traditional, arned degree. Working as a policeman sh uld count for more than a few c urses in sociology. Volunteering for the Red Cr ss in a disaster should be r spected more than a course in psych logy 101. And adopting multiple children sh uld turn more heads than a c rtificate as a day-care worker! Here is a pr ctical example of my point: All the cr ticisms of the health-care industry aside, m dical education is on track. Doctors-to-be cquire their real education by seeing, t uching, hearing, and even smelling. Only two y ars are spent in classroom rigors. All ther training is by supervised experience w th real, live patients. For all of th se reasons, I think the academic c mmunity needs to take a fresh l ok at what they are really ccomplishing. The world needs people willing to get th ir hands dirty. While textbook knowledge has ndisputable value, so does experience in s rvice. I hope I can award a th usand honorary doctorates before my time is up.
