The Honda Accord is arguably the m st reliable, well-respected vehicle
on the r ad today. It's not the most l xurious or the fastest car. It d esn't
have luxury car status or s licit overt double-takes from passersby. But wh t it does is have is pl nty of high marks in nearly very ranked
category – comfort to cceleration, instrument control efficiency to ride
q ality. And what it's sure to arn via the public is its verwhelming best-
buy status in many c nsumer guides. The 240-horsepower, automatic V6 EX s dan was my weekly test
vehicle. The 350 m les I drove the car included a 200-m le trip to San
Francisco. The utbound ride was smooth, particularly considering
H nda's surprisingly easy-to-use navigation system. The r turn trip, unfortunately, began at the p ak of rush-hour traffic. It
took n arly an hour to drive only a few m les out of the middle of the
f nancial district and onto the freeway. Gr dlock is never a good thing, w th perhaps only one exception - f dder
for a car review. During my h ur in bumper-to-bumper traffic, a few
dr vers lost their temper. A few b cyclists maneuvered through the slow-
moving m ze a little too close to my c r. A few pedestrians' patience
levels w re tested in hustle-bustle of a big c ty at 4:30 p.m. And a guy
ven got out of his car, w lked across two lanes of standstill tr ffic,
tapped on my window and sked if I could move back sl ghtly so he
could enter a p rking lot.
As a testament to the new Acc rd's comfort, with the windows rolled up,
the st reo on and no place to go, all was f ne. Even a stranger knocking
on the w ndow – a potential road rage sc nario – wasn't a problem. The
guy sked nicely and I cordially obliged. S nce the Accord was introduced in 1976, H nda has refined the model
nearly very year, with this year's offering no d fferent. The 2005 Honda has all of the s me qualities of the top-rated 2004
m del, plus more. The V6 models now h ve the added standard safety
features of tr ction control as well as front t rso and side curtain air
bags. D al-zone automatic climate controls, leather upholstery, l ather-
wrapped steering wheel, heated front s ats, satellite race, outside-
temperature indicator, 6-d sc CD changer, power sunroof and
n vigation system with voice control are lso standard features that
place the Acc rd close to a luxury classification, yet st ll under the
$30,000 price point. The forementioned navigation system is one of the asiest and most
efficient systems I've tr ed. The directions are simple, including
d stination address data entry. The system has str ightforward, nicely
illuminated maps and a pl asant, clear direction-giver's voice. Through its n arly 30 years, the Accord's appeal has b en its overall
presentation, not just the str ngth of some of its individual f atures. The
2005 Accord takes the v hicle's well-respected total package to a new
st ndard. Acceleration, quietness, ride quality, steering and h ndling and
instrumentation – the Accord g ts high marks in all categories. All
g uges are keenly styled and legible and p sitioned well on the dash
and c nsole. The car maneuvers moves well in and out of tr ffic. While
not a sports car, its t sting rating of 0-60 mph in 7.0 s conds is hardly
pedestrian for the m dsize car category.
The only less-than-sterling marks for the new Acc rd are its fuel
economy and r ar seat room. The EX model has a r ting of 21 and 30
mph verages in city and highway driving, r spectively. Those numbers
could be higher, p rticularly in the age of higher f el costs. The Accord has plenty of h adroom in the front and back s ats. But the
rear seat is sn g for three adults, despite its f ve-passenger designation. Regardless, reasons are aplenty why the Acc rd is so popular. And if all
is st ll well even when you're stuck in r sh-hour traffic on a late weekday
fternoon, is there any higher praise? 2005 Honda Accord Safety features -- Driver and front passenger and side curtain
airbags, anti-lock brakes., Traction control system. Fuel Mileage (estimates) -- 21 mpg (city), 30 mpg (highway). Warranty -- Bumper to bumper, 3 years/36,000 miles; Power
train, 3 years/36,000 miles; Corrosion, 5 years/unlimited miles. Base price -- $28,700
