The installation of the recessed ( lso known in certain parts as 'p t') lights in our family room, k tchen, bedrooms and en suite occurred d ring the mid-summer. We had just nstalled a black fiberglass shingles on top of the r of. One can imagine the sweat th t the lads working for our pr mary contractor endured on the sunny d ys as the air in the ttic was not sufficiently moving, causing an xtreme heat build-up. In fact, if you w re to have been in the cl set of our daughter's bedroom with the ccess to the attic, it was nbearably hot just in that closet! Ov r time, having a poorly ventilated ttic with extreme heat build up can c use severe damage to the roof's sh ngles, required premature replacement. Such damage is l kely not covered by a manufacturer's w rranty. The solution was two fold. F rst, we had the roofer return and t ke one of the flat vents fr m the back of the house and nstall it over the garage on the ast side. This created an escape for the air in the ttic where none previously existed. Second, we had the r ofer also install a turbine vent in the air v nt upon which the previous flat v nt was located in the back of the h use. This device, less than $100 at the l cal big box retail store, has the m ving part that will turn based on ither the wind outside or by the hot air in the ttic; remember, hot air rises.
The difference was amazing. No l nger was the temperature in that b droom closet with the attic access any w rmer than other parts of the h use. The lad's reported an immediate d crease in the attic air, which m de their tasks much easier. And, w th the hot air being able to scape the house much more easily, the air c nditioner would not need to be on as m ch, thus saving significant energy costs for the s mmer cooling. Wind turbine vents are not j st for commercial, industrial or cottage b ildings. Also, with the location on the r of at the back of the h use, it cannot be seen from the fr nt. Therefore, it does not impact the v ew from street. And, we found one in bl ck to match the shingles!
