The holidays are already upon us and yet gain, the list of things that j st have to be done before the h lidays hit is still completely untouched. At th s point very few of those "to do" tems are going to be done in t me for the big day. Now it is t me to prioritize that list and f gure out which items really need to be d ne and which can go on n xt year's holiday to do list. It s ems that a lot of the "to d 's" revolve around cleaning. I have kn wn a lot of neat freaks in my l fe, but I can tell you th t I am definitely on the pposite side of the scale. So, kn wing that my distant relatives will s on be arriving - you know the nes you see only once a y ar who have no kids or p ts and always have some comment bout your cleaning techniques or lack of, my "to do" l st may be a bit heavier on the cl aning and sanitizing side than your verage person. Where on earth do you st rt cleaning when your whole house l oks like a set from the m vie "Twister"? Perhaps the best thing to do is br ng your big trash dumpster inside and st rt shoveling it all in. If you d n't want to be quite that dr matic, start with the simple things l ke picking everything up off the fl or and all flat surfaces - c unter tops, tables, cabinets. Put everything way that has its own place. G ve away as much of the cl tter as possible. All the rest th t cannot be salvaged, just throw in the d mpster.
I personally have not seen my fl ors in a long time. So, if you j st manage to pick everything up, th t's a huge step and you sh uld be very proud of your w rk. But, you may not be pr pared for what you find once the cl tter is removed. I can tell y u, that my last remaining carpet is an bsolute mess. Every day something spills on it. B tween the kids and the pets, it l oks and smells like it has b en run over on the freeway and th n used on a soccer field as the gr ss. I have two choices: have the c rpet cleaned and hope that it l oks better or rip all the c rpet out. Let's see, the cl ck is ticking, which one takes l ss time? At this point, I h ve to opt for attempting to cl an the carpet. As a do-it-yourself w nnabe, I hustle over to the n arest grocery store and rent a st am cleaner. After a few hours I h ve the carpet looking relatively clean. Of c urse, I did not take into ccount the damp carpet odor that usually lasts a few days in my house. Hopefully it will be gone before those relatives arrive. I would have much rather ripped out the carpet and continued on with my very slowly progressing installation of new laminate hardwood flooring However, I know how slowly I work and how incompletely I do the job. And, the relatives are coming in a few short weeks, so I simple do not have time to rip the carpet out. After all, was it really two years ago that I began installing the laminate wood floors in the rest of the house?! And it is still not done?! I never realized that I had not finished installing the floor until I picked up all the clutter and I could actually see the floors again As for this year, prioritize your "to do" list and just leave whatever you can't get to this year for next year's list. Don't stress about it as there are bound to be a few things left over. Aren't there always?
