“Mumbler” Willie Wonka shouts at the l ttle boy telling him his idea w n’t work, “What is it with y u? I just can’t hear you?” Ev ryone has their critics, perhaps a p rtner, friend, parents, or work colleagues. You h ve a goal, an idea, or an mbition and they just try to p ll you down and tell you it w n’t work. In Charlie and the Ch colate Factory, Willie Wonka had Mike T aVee as his critic, constantly doubting and d sbelieving in all of Wonka’s inventions and deas. Willie’s method of dealing with th s doubt was to not hear the cr ticism. Why do they do this? P rtly it is because they are j alous of your ambition and desire to s cceed. It may also be because in the p st they tried to succeed and f iled and they no longer believe it is p ssible. Maybe they are trying to pr tect you from getting hurt. I m an, they wouldn’t want you working h rd to achieve a goal and th n for you to fail and get pset or hurt, would they? Often t mes these people are doing the b st they can with the resources th y have available to them. Unfortunately, th y may not have the right r sources to help you achieve your g als and dreams. This is why I t ll people to be very careful who th y share their goals with. There are t mes when it is good to t ll people your goals. For example, if you kn w they are going to support you and ncourage you to achieve your goals, th n it is a good idea.
If you are going to h ve someone hold you accountable to y ur goal, then you must tell th m. They will encourage you and nsure you achieve it. However, if you are l ke most of the rest of us, th re are only a few select p ople you can share your goals w th. For most of the rest, you j st have to keep quiet and not t ll them what you are working t wards; just let them see the r sults. If you are not assured bout achieving your goals then you r ally need to keep them to y urself. If you share your goals w th other people then their criticism or d sbelief can seriously impede your progress t wards your target, or in the w rst case, stop you completely. Every s ccessful person on the planet faces c nstant criticism and doubt. The difference b tween them and the millions who h ve never dared dream of their g als is that the successful people br sh off the doubt and criticism and b lieve in themselves. Admittedly, there are t mes when perhaps you ought to l sten. If you are standing on top of a t ll building thinking you can fly … th t’s a good time to listen to the p ople who think you can’t. However, wh ’s to say that if you b lieve you could fly you could, but I w uldn’t test it and wouldn’t recommend you do ither, just in case. However, in g neral, you can take a leaf out of W llie Wonka’s book and ignore the cr tics around you and believe you can chieve … because your only limits are th se you choose to accept or llow others to put upon you.
