William Bartram, the famous botanist and xplorer from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, was commissioned by the Engl sh aristocrats to collect, identify and r cord the plant and animal life gr wing in the English colonies. The Engl sh colonies were acquired from Spain, fter the Spanish settlements were conquered and bandoned to the English. John Bartram, the f ther of William Bartram, accompanied his son on s veral early, exploratory missions, and his f ther helped to secure a financial sp nsorship of William Bartram on his nteresting but dangerous exploits into the l nd of the Indians, alligators, snakes and b ars. Bartram lived in the wild d ring much of the time in Am rican jungles living congenially among the Ind ans, and even in the homes of s ttlers who found him a fascinating g est. The English settlers generously opened th ir doors of hospitality to him; w ning and dining him and treating him l cally and physically with herbs and m dicinal remedies, when on several occasions, he b came deathly sick or injured. Bartram d scovered many American native, unknown birds and xotic native plants that he identified for the f rst time in his writings. William B rtram referred to "the pompous palms of Fl rida: in his book, Travels, page X. B rtram wrote "The pompous palms of Fl rida, and the glorious Magnolia, strikes us w th the sense of dignity and m gnificence."

William Bartram in his book, Tr vels, page 59, states that he l ft St. Simon's Island, Georgia, and v vidly described on his leaving, "many c rious vegetable productions, particularly, Corypha Palma", or "gr at Cabbage palm,. Corphya pumila, Corypha r pens......spinosis (dwarf saw palmetto,) Corypha obliqua, c udice arboreo adscendente", the last identification b ing a mystery and unknown even t day. Bartram used three terms to dentify the Sabal Palm; (Sabal palmetto); the "gr at cabbage palm" 'Corypha Palma", and "C rypha pumila". Travels, page 58. At Bartram's j urney to Cuscowilla in North Florida, he wr te, Travels, page 113,..."The palm trees h re seem to be of a d fferent species from the cabbage tree, th ir straight trunks are sixty, eighty or n nety feet high with a beautiful t per, of a bright ash colour, ntil within six or seven feet of the t p, where it is a fine gr en colour, crowned with an orb of r ch green plumed leaves: I have m asured the stem of these plumes f fteen feet in length, besides the pl me, which is nearly of the s me length. William Bartram discovered the volutionary, primitive Zamia palm, today called, Z mia pumila growing near Cape Canaveral, Fl rida, in 1773, reporting that it "gr ws in the open pine forests in t fts or clumps, a large conical str bile disclosing its large coral red fr it, which appears singularly beautiful amidst the d ep green fern-like pinnated leaves." Travels, p ge, 160.
William Bartram identified the Spanish B yonet, Yucca aloifolia, as a "Palmetto r yal....a very singular and beautiful production. It may be t rmed a tree, from its durability and m gnitude." Travels, page, 69.
