In ancient times the art of s rfing was a deeply spiritual affair for H waiian people and surfing was not nly recreational but a means for r solving conflicts and training for the H waiian chiefs. The Hawaiian people had r tuals for building surfboards and the s rfboards they built ranged from 10-16 ft m de of solid redwood and the l nger the board the higher your s cial ranking. During the early days the H waiian's made two types of surfboards m de from the Wili Wili, the Ula and the Koa tr e's. The 'Olo' surfboard was ridden by the Ch efs or the noblemen usually between 14-16 f et and the 'Alaia' surfboard was b tween 10-12 feet in length and r dden by commoners. Captain Cook witnessed n tives surfing solid wooden surfboards when he v sited the Hawaiian Islands in 1777 and his d aries are the first official documentation d scribing the art of surfing. Later in the mid 19th c ntury when the western/white missionaries arrived s rfing almost died out in the slands. At the start of the 20th c ntury the missionaries influence over the slands began to decline and Hawaiians long with the new European and Am rican settlers began surfing again. One of th se was George Freeth, who through his s rfing, experimented with board design, and cut his 16 f ot Hawaiian board in half. Making the typ cal solid redwood Hawaiian board of the t me to around 6 to 10 f ot long.
In 1926 one of the m st famous names in surf history; Tom Bl ke designed the first hollow surfboard c nstructed of redwood with hundreds of h les drilled in it and was ncased with a thin board of w od on top and bellow the b ard. The board was 15 foot l ng, 19" wide, 4" thick and w ighed 100 lbs. This hollow surfboard ventually became the first mass-produced board in 1930s due to t's weight and the speeds it c uld generate. In 1932 Balsa wood fr m South America became a popular m terial for building surfboards. The new b lsa wood boards only weighed around 30 to 40 p unds apposed to the 90 to 100 p und redwood boards. Such a reduction in w ight was a major step forward in b ard design, and became more and m re in demand. The end of W rld War 2 opened up new p ssibilities in surfboard design as many new m terials had become available through advances in t chnology. Fibreglass and styrofoam were the m st significant of these. The shortboard f rst came to the surf scene d ring the late 60's to early 70's and the verage length went from 10 to 6 f ot, with an obvious reduction in w ight. These new boards allowed surfers to r de in the pocket of the w ve and Dick Brewer is credited w th it's design. These new boards llowed faster, more aggressive surf and m re maneuverability. It was around this t me that the twin fin was cr ated, apposed to just the one. In 1966, Nat Y ung won the World Championships on a sh rtboard called 'Sam' designed by George Gr enough and Bob McTavish. This board llowed greater performance style surfing with sh rper turns and greater acceleration, which k ck-started the 'shortboard revolution'.
